Same thing happens to mine, and mine was purchased brand new. Happens ON OCCASION - not every time. Sometimes I also have to push play (twice, a few seconds apart) to get the tape going. Most of the time, works fine tho. I just accepted it. I think it was a common flaw with these units.

I am curious if you ever solved this issue. I actually just started to use my CT-WM77R yesterday. Luckily it's working like a champ. No issue what-so-ever. I'm working on capturing all my audio cassettes and converting them to MP3s. I pray that mine holds out for another month so I can get all my tapes converted over. This player was simply the most amazing changer on the market in 1991. I absolutely loved the way it could sync with CD Changer and intellegently re-arrange tracks so that you could copy the whole contents of CD's to the audio tape. Back then, I didn't want to jog with a CD player... the thing would always skip... so I would convert the CD to cassettes so I could go running. This tech was quite amazing for the time. I'm so grateful that mine is working 100% right now.
