Why Real Madrid and Barcelona Are Fading Away?

Spain has dominated football so much since the turn of the century. In every year between 2008 and 2012, a Spanish football club or the Spain national team ended up winning one of the major footballing trophies. During this period of 4 years, Spanish teams and the national team won 2 Euros, 2 Champions Leagues, and 1 World Cup. They were really on top of the world.

And as expected, because of how dominant they were, the Spanish league attracted the best players in the world. As at 2009, La Liga could boast of having Kaka, Benzema, Higuain, Aguero, Henry, Xavi, Ibrahimovic, Raul, Iniesta, and of course, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Back then, when El Clasico came on, the entire world stood still – it was the apex of club football. Absolutely nothing came close.

But fast forward to the present, and it’s a completely different tale. Apart from Madrid and Barcelona fans, hardly anybody is really concerned about the Clasico these days. In Europe, things have also gotten really bad. In the Champions League this season, only one Spanish team managed to make it out of their group.

And it was a similar story in the 2020-21 season. Spain also had just one representative in the quarter finals. This is a completely different story from what was the case in the 10 years between 2008 and 2018. During this period, Spanish clubs made it to the final in 7 years, 5 of them coming in back-to-back years between 2013 and 2018.

In fact, in 2 of those years, two Spanish clubs went head-to-head in the final. That’s the quality we were used to back then, but all that is fast fading away. So, it begs the question, why is Spanish football fading away?

Barca and Madrid have the best young midfield in the world, Barca has the best defence in the world, Madrid has two amazing wingers with insane potential.

Sevilla just won the Europa league (again) Villarreal did it a couple seasons ago and Real Madrid won it in 2022. I still think la liga can take out the epl if it was marketed better.

Spanish football isnt fading away. We’re going through a transitional period. Southern European clubs have been on top up until 2018. They’ve dominated Europe. Then the English prem came back for 3 years when Ronaldo left Real, Messi leaving Barca. But be sure, Spanish football will be back. We already have two teams in the semi finals of European toirnaments.

Since the 2007-08 season there's only been 1 year, 2019-20 season, where we haven't had a Spanish team in the semifinals. No other league even comes close to that level of consistent UCL performance

I generally don't think any of those teams are fading away, sure it just isn't the same as it was, but if you take a look at the Real Madrid back when the first won a UCL, they won 6 in a row, but it took so many years just to win it once again, but as we all know, Madrid made a massive comeback by winning 5 ucl's within 8 years, including Barcelona when they manage to win 4 UCL's in this era. These 2 can make a comeback whenever they want, they both have insanely exciting talents and so much rumours signing many more amazing talents, you just simply can't compare these 2 clubs to any other, they're revolutionary and can make a comeback.

you forgot to talk about how la liga teams are investing in infrustructure, villareal, athletic club, real sociadad, madrid and barca have some of the best stadiums in europe also teams like mallorca, rayo vallecano, osasuna and girona have really improved in terms of fans, perfomance and stadium atmosphere. I really like the athletic club fans they give me chills, betis, sevilla, osasuna have had major improvements in terms of filling their stadiums. there is just bad publicity around la liga at the moment and mostly because of barca slump in european competition but i think the moment they start getting into uefa semis together with both madrid teams, no one will question the quality in la liga.

The reason laliga has less spectators is because of the renovations of the laliga stadiums all over Spain.

As long as Barcelona and Real Madrid attract world class talent, La Liga will never truly "fade away".

Fading away? You mean the most talented league right?
•Most UCL
•Most Europa
•Most Club world cups

#13th place Sevilla just embarrassed Man U. While 13th place Chelsea looked like they didn’t even belong on a field with Real. Prem fans are literally delusional. They have the most expensive players, not the best. 😂😂😂

I remember Manchester United fans saying that La Liga is a terrible league and not competitive against the EPL. A few weeks later they got kicked out from Europa League by La Liga relegation candidate Sevilla.
