How To Feed Pollen Patties To Bees (Pollen Substitute)

Показать описание
In order for a honey bee colony to thrive the population needs to grow fast. As winter changes to spring, trees and plants start to produce pollen which the bees need to raise more bees. Pollen is much needed protein and bees use it to raise more bees. Pollen patties are sometimes fed as a substitute. They are used for several reasons during the bee seasons. One of the main reasons is during times of nectar dearth. In this video I show how to properly place a pollen patty in a bee hive.

Hi Jason. My question is about the path the pollen patty takes to help in brood production. Does the queen eat it, or is she fed it by others? I realize that it is a supplement to natural incoming pollen. Maybe it's just an abundance of food that the queen detects to stimulate her laying?? Thanks for the video.

Hi J-man. I don't use pollen sub after using it a couple of times. Both times when I checked to see if the Bees were eating it, the stuff was infested with SHB larvae. Have you ever seen that?

Someone near my house must be feeding a homemade pollen concoction because my bees are coming back home absolutely loaded with "pollen" on their legs. Quite a bit of it ends up on the ground under the hive, so I tasted it. Not sure what it is, but it tastes like sweet flower and it's a pale yellow color. Anyone have an idea why the bees aren't using it all?

Great video. Thanks! I am in mid-MD. Would I add patties around the same time as you did: early April? What triggers the application of patties in the Spring? Also, have you done a video on feeding patties in fall in preparation for winter? I am wondering when you would start adding patties in the fall, too. Thanks, again!
