Riding the twisties is the best teacher. Keep doing it.

Very scenic trip but I can see how it would take your full concentration! Glad you made it through ok! 😃

Thanks to this video, I just rode Tantalus and Round Top for the first time, after less than a year of riding. It was amazing. Thanks for inspiring me to expand my comfort zone!

Wow! You did a twisty 🙏🏻🙂. Really good job. I love twisteys. They are nice. Sometimes you can lose your confidence when you don't hit a curve right and you need to slow down. The only thing you can do to do it better is to do it again 🏆

You did a great job, just the right speeds considering that road was CRATERED! You’re making me want to fly to Hawaii and rent a motor for a few days

I started out on Honda cruisers, with only a few times on dirt bikes. Riding in the dirt is entirely different because the surface is uneven and low traction.
I have a Honda CRF250L dual sport to learn riding off-road here in Oregon this summer, and just bought a middle weight adventure bike (Honda Transalp) to replace my BMW f650GS twin as my primary bike. Not too much off-road on either yet.

I also have a dual sport on Maui that I need to get over to work on and get running soon. If you find that you enjoy riding off-road, you might take a look at dual sports or a light weight (and low seat) adventure bike for your next bike.

Moto Jitzu is real good for learning technique (YouTube).
From the looks of that road, it’s not for ripping on. It’s too bumpy, and as you said, slime/wet is not so good for traction.
Turning into turns by counter-steering and adjusting speed, what to do if you come in too hot, avoiding target fixation.
It’s a complex, but very worthwhile skill to develop.

Definitely a bit more challenging than the every day routes, but you'll come out of it a better rider 😊

As you gain experience and want to pick up the pace (and are on good, smooth tarmac), more technique comes into play.
The most important thing is to stay within your comfort zone, and skill level as you get more experience.

Ill be back there visiting family in 2 weeks!!!, want to bring some riding gear and rent a motorcycle. I remember that route, riding my old CBR600rr thorough there was terrible 😂

Tantalus is difficult, I'm surprised you didn't dump your bike. I recommend you check out Old Kalanianaole Rd by Waimanalo.

Counter steering and counter leaning is some of the most importent tecnics to learn for newer riders, also defensive riding is a good thing to look in to, thinking 3 steps ahead can safe your life on a bike.

Rea you were smart for slowing down. That road looked horrible.😎Dave H

Dang that looks more like an adventure trail. Nice job though. No such thing as going to slow, only going to fast. We live close to the mountains of N. Georgia and N. Carolina and always looking for new roads. Ride safe

Hey, lots of Love and Good fortune from India. I have a question, I recently bought my First Motorbike ever (Royal Enfield’s Hunter 350) a month ago to be precise and learned how to ride it but I’m still not very comfortable in twisties especially uphill and we have a lot of them here in Himalayas, I was wondering how much time it takes to master fluid turns. I even dropped my motorcycle twice due to slow momentum (Thank God nothing happened to it due to Crash guard) and to be fully transparent, my Gear shifting is also not very smooth but still better than the day 1.

Damn is tantalus that bad now? Maybe the city is choosing not to repair all the potholes to deter the drifters (used to do that too midnight in my 240sx). I used to rip my GS500 and Ninja 300 up there all the time. I crashed my moped in high school going downhill on the darkside but I had a full face helmet, gloves, boots, hoodie and jeans so i just got my pride hurt. But that was the first time I appreciated wearing gear. A lot of moped riders in Hawaii don't even wear helmets. Last bike I had was a DRZ-400 that i got after I sold my BMW 1100 RTP. Mainly cause I thought a dual sport would be better to combat Hawaii's pothole problem, why go around them when you can just go over them.. lol

Hi @Rea, what is the brand of the helmet, that your boyfriend is wearing? Thank!

That road sucks. Not the curves but the pavement. You should practice on twisties with good pavement before struggling through this crap. I've been riding 50 years and would avoid that road just because of it's condition. I ride on dirt all the time on my Valkyrie with no problem because it is smoother than that.
