Marwan al-Bakr met the girl, who had taken her mother’s medication and was sleeping rough on the steps of Hampden Park, at a bus stop in Glasgow
An illegal immigrant raped a vulnerable 15-year-old girl who was described as “a predator’s dream” in an attack on Valentine’s Day, a court has heard.
Marwan al-Bakr, who is from Syria, met the teenager after dark outside a supermarket in Glasgow before taking her to a grassy area nearby and forcing himself on her. He denied having sex with the youngster, despite damning DNA evidence.
Al-Bakr, 32, claimed instead that he had been targeted by police since he entered the country and that the allegations against him were all fabricated. But a jury at the High Court in Livingston rejected his defence and took only an hour to return a unanimous verdict finding him guilty of the rape.
The university graduate was seeking asylum in the UK after claiming he had been trafficked “by force” from Ireland to Scotland. He fled to Germany after he was charged with the rape and had to be extradited back to Scotland on a European arrest warrant.
A jury heard that on the evening of February 14, 2022, the teenage victim had been reported missing by her mother after she failed to return home after an argument. The girl had been sleeping on the steps at Hampden Stadium before she met al-Bakr at a bus stop in Toryglen.
