The TRUTH About Mixing in Mono! Should You Do It?

Should you mix in mono? Is mixing in mono the secret to a perfect mix? Or is it just a gimmick? In this FL Studio beginner tutorial, I will explain why you should, and why you shouldn't be mixing in mono.
There are many aspects of music production and mixing and mastering are perhaps one of the things most people struggle with. Some people claim that mixing in mono will make everything so much easier, and by simply mixing in mono, you can get a perfectly balanced mix that works everywhere every time. But is it really that simple? Is mixing in mono really the key to a perfect mix?
Of course, it's not that simple. There are pros and cons with everything, and mixing in mono does have some advantages, but there are also some problems related to mixing in mono.
My best advice is to take advantage of the pros and avoid the cons, by constantly checking your mix in mono when mixing. I rarely mix in mono myself, but I do check my mix in mono quite often. Just as you would want to check your mix on both headphones and monitors to make sure that it works well on both. It's all about finding that perfect balance. It's impossible to mix a song so that it sounds great everywhere. The best you can really hope for is a mix that sounds decent on most devices. In other words, a fairly neutral and tonally balanced mix. That should sound decent on most devices.
Note: I have reused some parts from an older video in this video.

Makes sense.
I can make my binaural tones in mono and finish them off in stereo.
Thank you so much.

It just hit me, you sound EXACTLY like the voice of Brooks Moore from "How it's Made" I had to look up what he looked like to make sure you weren't the same guy!😂

When i explain tons of information about Music production, my friend said one thing. "I don't care how much physics and techniques you've implemented. If it sounds good, it's good. That's all". And that's all it matters in the end.

Yeah my problem sometimes is relying too much on stereo to make the mix cleaner when I could have done a better eq

It also doesn't matter if your signal is mono or stereo if 2 signals are out of phase and you put them in mono you hear the 2 signals be flammed, because the only thing you did is combine 2 channels into 1 source so it stayed as it is so you didn't delete the other signal, so it doesn't matter if your subbass is mono or stereo because stereo width has nothing to do with phase at all, so if your subbass has right and left channel mismatch and then you put it in mono it's still stay out of phase because you only combined 2 mismatched signals so they're still not matched, so it doesn't matter of your low end is mono or stereo because both signal stay as they are and never go out of phase.

Rick Beato says that when you are at your desk close to your speakers, you are already listening in mono (you don't need to 'put' it in mono)

How loud should your songs be for mixing and mastering? Using youleen lufs plugin and stock plugins?

Great Video. Very informative and an eye opener! I have a question though. In the video you mentioned that the low ends should remain in mono. Should that be only for the mixing phase or should they still remain in mono once I'm ready to export the file to WAV/MP3 ?

What about basses that have stereo information that when you make them mono they lose their weight or sound squashed ?
