In a significant development, India has successfully secured a deal to acquire 31 MQ-9 Reaper drones from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), a prominent US-based company. The procurement of these advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is being facilitated through government-to-government channels and the Foreign Military Sales route, with an estimated cost of approximately US$ 3 billion.

This deal is being seen as a key highlight of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States.

The joint statement released at the conclusion of discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden in Washington DC acknowledges and applauds India's intention to procure General Atomics MQ-9B High-Altitude, Long-Endurance (HALE) UAVs. These state-of-the-art drones will be assembled within India.

Viewers may note that in November 2020, the Indian Navy began operating two leased MQ-9B SeaGuardians, which is the naval variant. The lease agreement was valid for one year and has been extended subsequently.
Its effectiveness convinced India to go for this deal.

In this video, Defense Updates analyses what MQ-9 Reaper will bring to the table for the Indian Armed forces?

I would rather India buy from us than Russia. I also would rather buy a product made in India instead of China.

An excellent report. The China angle was very clear. Even India requires allies these days. I thought the indigenous build was interesting. It could be a little of letting the cat out of the bag. But you have to do what you have to do.

How long until they 'trade' one to Russia for a jet....India and Russia love to share tech with each other.

If we are selling it it’s old news . We have made something better therefore sell old tech, nevertheless still top notch kit. America and India need to improve relations so hopefully this is a step forward in that direction.

Waste of the money. India could spend those monies far better by buying state of the art drones from Iran. But, perhaps they need some targets for training their pilots as to how to piss on a drone in the air and have them to crash.

selling old drones at new prices is your business of getting rid of old depreciating assets

Folks the MQ9 Reaper is 30 year old technology. It was released in 2001. Which means it was developed in the 1990s. Is it good? Of course it is. But a shit load has changed since its development. And as they said, the sensor package is everything. They won’t get the latest package.

And if they buy the consumable weapons, all the better. Finally, Russia is a second rate power except for their nukes. China isn’t that good, even if they steal the plans they can’t build it. They can’t even build a generation old Russian jet engine, much less anything too high tech. While they still have strength in numbers, and they are trying desperately to catch up, they have quite a few problems.

The ONLY way the US should sell any military equipment to India would be for them to give up all Russian military contracts!

Think the price is a little off. 3billion for 31 drones would make them more expensive then the f35 at about 97 million each.

China isn't afraid of an India that uses Russian weapons. An India that uses American weapons, however, is going to make a fearsome competitor out of China's southern rival.
