you are nuts, but i thoroughly enjoyed watching you mess around with this ancient computer. you ran into practically every common cable, jumper, bios, hardware device error that was common on these things. thanks for sharing...

I find it amazing that you were even able to buy this!

In the UK you would NEVER see a computer, no matter what state, in a charity shop (thrift store).

They are not allowed to sell them due to data protection laws. Even if you wipe them when you donate they will never sell them. I once saw a carry case, cables, charger and manual for a laptop in such a store. The laptop had been "disposed" of as it was a computer. But you could buy the manual :D

Things you also will never see old computer parts of any sort including keyboards or mice. Exceptions would be for those in boxes but its very rare.

In fact in the UK (and I think in the US also) its getting quire rare to find any sort of electronics in these stores in general. Its quite rare for me to find audio or video appliances that are not massively overpriced anymore.

However, I recently found a charity shop in a very small town (basically a large village) that had a selection of laser discs! These things are as rare as diamonds in the UK. Almost nobody here bothered with Ld's back then so finding a player or a disc thats not on ebay is almost unheard of.

27:48 By formatting C: you deleted hard drive overlay (EZ Drive) which helps BIOS to see drives of over 504M capacity.

I still have a retro Toshiba satellite laptop with 266 mhz Pentium processor and 96 mb ram, still runs Windows98 second edition and has its original 4.1gb hard drive manufactured in October of 1998.

The hard drive originally had EZdrive installed, to overcome the 500mb limitation in BIOS. If you want to use the full potentional of the HD, then you must reinstall EZdrive. It also wipes the whole hard drive though. You can download it from here:

I have this same motherboard. It unfortunately doesn't have its BIOS IC chip. Is there anyway that you can send me a rom dump file?

Good PC. I have an NT 4.0 that still works and yet, a good old PC. Well, new laptop computers (bought from any retail store like Best Buy, Walmart, Staples, etc., ) are becoming widespread and people are far more likely having problems with the brand new Windows 10 PCs. Well Windows 10 was out about let's say 1-2 years ago and I have a Lenovo ThinkPad, which ran 7 but now running Windows 10. And yes, anything old still goes strong. People who buy vintage fans, computers, original Nintendos, etc., are far more likely to get better luck to old stuff than with the new ones. In addition, my dad gave me a Studio XPS 8000 (used to run Vista but now upgraded to 7), which is now having a problem with the hard drive (probably needs to be replaced) and Windows 7 is becoming a troublesome unit nowadays.

Anyhow, great find.
