In the previous decade most media with global reach consisted of several major newspapers that had the resources to gather information directly as associations like Reuters and AP were rare compared to today.
The speed with which the information spreads now has created an ideal condition for a phenomenon called circular reporting. This happens when publication A writes wrong information and the other publication B prints it. And when this happens publication B becomes the source of the information. And when multiple publications report on the same false story and other things that are verified by multiple sources.
Not only newspapers or electronic media but digital media including social media and websites also promote circular reporting. As most people come to these pages are filled with unverified sources and fact make way straight to a newspaper article or a newsroom debate.
Recent technologies also had an impact to break down the communication barrier between information and people. But the desire for quick answers may overpower the desire to be certain for their validity. Avoiding sensationalized media, searching for criticism for information, and tracing the source for information will slow down the circular reporting, give more time to the truth to put on its shoes.
