Smashmouth Incrementalism and the Trump Train | Blog & Mablog

The last month has seen a number of remarkable and momentous events. We may begin with Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance, the pressure on him to step down, and the palace intrigue that resulted in him bowing out of the race, but not stepping down from the presidency, and then topped off by his weird disappearance and reappearance.

And then on the other side, the close-call near assassination of Donald Trump and his triumphant fist in the air, followed by the Republican platform backing away from its long-standing commitment to life, followed hard by the selection of JD Vance for veep. This last point was heartening in a lot of ways, but disheartening because Vance apparently softened his pro-life stand in order to qualify for the slot, when he clearly knows better. This brings in—with a sickening but not surprising thud—the realization that in this Trump-transformed Republican Party, commitment to life is not a principle, but rather has become a bargaining chip.

I'm one of those Norman Abolitionists referred to in this post. And this type of level headed discussion is the way forward. The discussion between Sumpter and Hunter was excellent. I think both sides laid out their position respectfully. I think Hunter held the intellectual high ground and still/also remained brotherly to Toby. When abortion is foot-stooled under the feet of Christ, it will not be because of 'this' group or 'that' group, it will be because God grants repentance to this nation. To that end, I'm grateful that you smash mouthers are running all the plays even while I am grateful for the way the Abolitionists are attempting to take the axe to the root. Let's work, y'all.

Thank you pastor Wilson. This is great. May God continue to bless your work and grant you strength to continue in the good work.

Greg Bahnsen also said something similar to what Doug is articulating here. I cannot quote him directly but hope to get the gist: The Kingdom will need a revival and once the people cry out for justice and the statues of God, even unsaved politicians, should they want to keep their positions, will vote on in the direction of their constituents.... I agree with this sentiment. Preach the word, convert the elect, change the world.

I agree. This is not the moment to retreat on this issue, even if women hate babies these days.

The goal should be to never have abortion be a federal issue (have supreme court kick any national van back to the states), win a super majority of states, then go for a constitutional amendment banning abortion.

Alternatively, a 7-2 supreme court decision that the fetus has rights protected by the constitution.

We need more Republican Senators, as you indicate.

No matter what they say, i think we'll move toward prolife once the election is over. This is largely a function of the states & will have to be fought there.

Politicians tend live in a world firmly detached from the real one. Politicians seem comfortable with the carnage happening in our world. So, I propose that we pray that the Holy Spirit make Himself so real and so palpable that would-be abortive mothers choose to have their children. We are trying to persuade the wrong population. We need to plead with the Father to convict the Hell out of our culture and leave the politicians to figure out how to repent.

What I'm really not understanding is this position of strength or the place at the table. I think we have neither but i totally agree that Trump is transactional. What i have that he needs right now is my vote. The transaction seems to me to be to withhold voting for any candidate that won't stand for life. If they want my vote then let's talk about the 2 things that matter the most to me: abolition and marriage. They abandoned both and gambled that we wouldn't dare choose not to vote. Abolitionists get accused of not playing the long game, but I really don't see how it's conscionable to capitulate and think that will gain us any ground. I think if we all linked arms, dug our heels in and said we will not vote for you unless you guard life and family, then he would be compelled to actually give us a seat.
