The North American boxcar is in decline and although it will probably never disappear completely from the rails, it's numbers are thinning drastically, especially those owned by the Class 1s.

Trains 21 is a documentary of railroading in the 21st century and a look at the fascinating world of transportation. On this channel we deal with all aspects of trains with a strong focus on the Northeast USA.

The goal is for you to learn a lot in a short amount of time.. A major infusion of knowledge in just a few minutes.. And if those few minutes distilled some of the best railroad information in the industry, we feel that we've done our job..

The trick is clarity.. Clear, concise and on point.. New videos are uploaded frequently and if you like what you see, comment, like and subscribe (in that order!).

The times are changing and we've seen those changes over the last 30 years or so. I remember when super boxcars and elongated tank cars started appearing on the railroads in my neck of the woods. Unit check that....elongated two mile long unit trains appear to be more profitable, so, yeah, who knows what the future holds. What railroad operators should not do is give trucking interests any leeway in the movement of freight. Frankly I'm an advocate of tractor trailer rigs being hauled on the back of rail cars. I don't see it in my neck of the woods in my travels where the UP and BNSF run. The only piggy backs I see are confined to military trains going to and coming from Ft. Hood.

I like the HI-cube box cars, and I saw a VRF grab bag recently that had a train with several wooden inside and outside braced boxcars, the outside braced are my favorites, I had a couple HO scale realistic models made with tiny stamped tin bracing and balsa wood slats they had other details and they were 31 bucks a piece in 1970, they had zinc plates glued inside on the bottom for ballast so the would stay on the track, AND realistic metal wheels and steel axle insulated from each other by plastic tubing on one end of each axle, it was a small layout but it was adequate, I had a Pennsylvania green F9 A&B set, a 4-6-2 pacific, an 0-4-0 dockside tank, an 0-6-0 with tender, a 4-8-8-2 cab ahead, an F-45, A GP-30, an RS-2 ALCO, an RS-11, AN MDT switcher that could go 320 scale miles per hour on 2 amps 12 volts, it was made by TYCO and they offered a slower armature for advanced modelers and I bought one and it was much quieter and top speed was 60 scale mph, much more pleasing ROFL.

Great video as usual. Your final comments about fallen flags Is spot on. I saw a video with a C&NW logo yesterday along with pure Erie and a pure DL&W boxcar. I'd like to see a red white and blue BAR car.
Thanks again.

Norfolk Southern is starting a new box car transloading service, they are still efficient for many uses, you can put 3 to 5 truck loads in one box car. Paper products, lumber, bricks and can goods go by box car quite a bit.

The U.S. Navy has a lot of box cars at Naval Weapons Station, Earle, N.J. that are over 50 years old and still use babbit bearings. They are slowly upgrading their rail cars. The same can't be said for their very out dated track.
