Welcome to Head Proportions Part 4 - Extreme Angles and Perspective

This is from the how to draw a head at any angle serious. I hope you enjoy and give me a like. Head proportions are difficult at times but with enough practice you can draw from your imagination any head at any angle without reference photos.

Check out my facebook page where you can see my Oil Paintings, Pencil Drawing and Spray Paintings as well.

Check out my new Website:

In prior videos we took a look at the front, side and three quater views
of the head. Along with some tilts. but what about extreme angles and perspective?
As we know a sphere doesnt experience forshortening. Its the same in very position.
But the full head isnt a sphere. To clarify this lets look at the head from the top view.
The incision representing the side plane of our head is not cut perfectly straight. It tapers
in the front. Also the extention of our jaw to the cranium makes the entire head subject to
forsortening. If we look at the jaw straight on we see that the jaw has a nice round point.
but when looking up at the jaw from an extreme angle we can see that the jaw shape is inverted.
As we can see from these photos the mandible is a horseshoe shape. And it depends on the angle
in which we view it that will make out drawing corect or incorect.
Know this we can deduce that the face will experience forsshortening, and special measures may be
needed to combat this problem. if we creat our circle and place it in a box we can solve this issue.
This helps the mind see that the head is a 3D form. From the front we can see the front plane, from the side we can see the
side plane and from our 3 quater view we can see the fron and side plane in these. Pictures.
Because a box has 3 dimensions in other cases both the front side and top or bottom planes
can be visible.
Now because foreshortening effects the porportion of our head and box. Our rule of thirds will look
quite different. When a box is tilted back or forward the area closest to us will appear larger.
Now obviously these examples are quite technical. But if you want to undestand these concepts well
it is good to look at the basic principles. You wont draw every head in the way i am about to show you,
infact after a couple times drawing this knowing where to place your pefect thirds becomes second nature
and plotting wont be necessary.

So taking a look at the head tilted back we first need to identify our cranim. Then find where to place out chin
and the put our box around it into perspective. Then add our centerline. So how dow we know where to place our thirds?
If you saw my one point perspective video and how i created the tiles it is quite obvious.

Horisontally the head can be divided into thirds. But the same is true vertically. If you divide the head vertically
you find some interesting langmarks. for example as we can see the verticle line fall on the pupil and out corner of the mouth.
If we draw a straght line from one corner of out plane to the other we can see intersecting areas. From each area draw a horizontal
line. the first line will be your mouth area the second area will represent the center of the face and the last line will be your brow.
To find the nose we can divide the centerline and eye line in half to creat another intersection and draw a horizontal line for the nose.

This is how i figured it out to draw the head in perspective, with the box form and with your video it confirms that i was for 80% on the right track. Thanks for putting this up. Its saves me a lot of time to figure the rest out. I will practice this method.

Perfect, one of those great tips that will save me loads of frustration eye-balling it all the time or using reference. Cheers, a video worth watching for a change.

Doesn't matter if the camera isn't the best quality, we can still decipher the lines and that's good enough. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, very helpful. :-)

The best tutorial I have ever watched on drawing the face. One day of testing this out and I am drawing some weird perspective stuff now. So fun. Your camera sucks though.

I have to remember to invert the chin and place the ears in certain places when drawing upward and downward faces. Your advice is helpful.

Even though I could barely see it, the lesson was AMAZING! Liked and Subbed!

It seems great for generalities but as with all systems at some point you have to learn to leave it behind. The property shows say 'location location location' is important. With "art"(small a) it is 'Practice Practice Practice '.

Those both looked good. The one showing the face looking up is always hardest for me. As a kid I'd try to draw the back of the album from the Heavy Metal movie soundtrack. Always had trouble trying to keep from making the nose look like a pig snout.
Thanks

It’s a great method. Thank you. Ignore the comments regarding the lines being too light. I think that what I saw was completely sensible. Construction lines are light, are they not?

Great tutorial. My only problem is that the guidelines are so light and I can't see them :(

Would the second horizontal line from the top be the eyes line? I wonder because in the front tilt down view it wouldn’t work 🤔also can I ask.. I tried to use this method on 3/4 head too but I can’t make it working
