4 Basic Groundhandling Exercises - BANDARRA

When I came up with the Groundhandling challenge the original idea was always to make it a challenge as a whole rather than just a collection of disjointed exercises.

So in this video I've taken the challenge myself to complete all the A level exercises in one go. It was very windy and super turbulent. Luckily I used the 14m2 BGD Seed otherwise there was no chance of doing this.

In the end it was a full on workout and really challenging, which is interesting given that the exercises themselves are very very simple. I completed all 4 in around 27minutes and 30 seconds. I'm sure I can do better next time.

Watching your struggle with A2 and though I'm strictly a novice, I thought I would pass along what I can hear my instructor saying... Power the wing with your stance. Bend your knees, get your butt back into the seat, stay on the balls of your feet (keep that low stance and never, ever stand tall) and whenever the wind fails you, stride back (upwind) purposefully. Then, when the wing goes one side or the other, turn your hips toward the side the wing is moving to (weight shifts the harness, relieving much of the need for lots of brake), pull some brake on that side, fully release the other brake (all the way to the pulley) and run under the wing (to center yourself) while backing upwind (to positively enforce your inputs the wing). So, if the wing goes to your left, *turn left* (hips), *pull left* (brake, fully releasing the right) and *run left* (actually, on a diagonal, left and upwind).
The keys are the low stance (gives you more authority over the wing and, gives you some 'buffer' against being lifted off your feet) and staying active. Our ground handling exercises look a lot like football drills (lots rapid of lateral motion), at times. These have done wonders for my ground handling. I will start filming my challenge videos soon.

Great challenge! Nice vid. Cool music. I finally got the Wing overhead, but can’t maintain it overhead. I will take your challenge. Thank you for sharing!

Great idea Andre...can't believe someone gave it a thumbs down. I guess you really can't please everyone. These exercises will improve everyone's flying skills for sure.

I am actually just starting to ground handle (with the same wing) and I am having a hard time. What happens to you at 6:03 keeps happening to me, like a frontal collapse and I am in very light to no winds running. Any tips?

Since you should master A1 so that you can do A2, A3, and A4, and you should master A4 so that you can repeat A1, it seems that a demonstration of A2 or A3, could cover three skills at once for the purposes of the video. Someone that has mastered these skills could also do A2 and A3 back to back. So, if someone were to pull the wing up (A1), keep it up for 30 seconds (A2), then move 20 meters (A3), and then kill it it a controlled manner (A4), three times in a row, would you consider that a success at all four skills? If so, the whole set could be done in under 3 minutes.

Although not rated, would the seed work as a mini wing? Does it produce a good amount of lift?
