Faux Leather Is Plastic

Faux leather, vegan leather, pleather, and/or PU leather is all plastic; more specifically polyurethane coatings on top of fabric or cheap leather.

Overtime this fabric will 'shed' and 'flake' and there is no way to correct this once it happens.

I am not picking a side in the vegan leather vs. real leather debate however this is a serious flaw in using this type of textile.

It really grinds my gears when people call faux leather "eco leather".

You mean to tell me that a piece of plastic that will degrade much faster and end up in the ocean is eco friendly?

This crap is sold in Joann’s. I didn’t know that this would happen. I made American girl doll clothes for my daughter years ago. Took them out of storage and, found the coats and other clothes I used this on did exactly what you showed here. That made me made after all the work that I put into this.

My very first Mat and Nat purse did this and I was very disappointed. I did not know that it was a super thin layer that would only last a short period of time before flaking. I'll buy second hand leather if I ever want that look again.

For me it's not about "what's better" though, it's about "what I can afford and what I can't". As much as I'd love to be walking in leather shoes because they will last for decades (and I'm not someone who buys new stuff every month or even year). But I'd have to sacrifice a lot just to be able to buy a couple of good shoes.
And so, I'll wear my faux leather, peeling ugly ass shoes for 10 years :/

That's just the reality of most of the people who buy faux leather sadly.
