The genius of Mendeleev's periodic table - Lou Serico

The elements had been listed and carefully arranged before Dmitri Mendeleev. They had even been organized by similar properties before. So why is Mendeelev's periodic table the one that has endured? Lou Serico explains via eka-aluminum, an element whose existence Mendeelev predicted years before it was discovered.

What's sad is that he spent the time to make the table so we'd have an easy reference so we wouldn't have to memorize them all but SCHOOLS STILL MAKE YOU MEMORIZE THEM ALL.

Mendeleev also created his table in such a way that the noble gases (which were discovered very late) could fit into the table without disturbing it. He was a true genius

I should probably make a chemistry joke but I guess all the good ones argon

00:38 - dmitri mendeleev
01:34 - he named an undiscovered element
01:41 - called eka-aluminum
02:28 - paul emile lecoq de boisbaudran discovered gallium, also known as eka-aluminum
03:07 - mendeleev predicted other elements aswell
03:49 - the element at number 101 was called mendelevium

for anyone who has to write notes Xx

Teacher: Do you know the symbol for Nobelium?
Me: No
Teacher: Sodium?
Me: Na
Teacher: great! 100/100

People like that truly make me proud of being human. Human genius and insight at times is just unreal.

It's shame that as species we have so much more flaws than advantages.

For those wondering why Mendeleev choose sanskrit numbers like Eka, Dvi, Tri as prefixes for some elements, Wikipedia states that he heard from his friend Otto Von Böhtlingk, who was writing a book about the Sanskrit grammarian Panini, who had also similarly arranged the Sanskrit alphabets by their phonetic properties ; hence the reference

It must be so cool to make a radical prediction and have it confirmed multiple times during your lifetime :)

The periodic table is one of the great devices for memorization. I recommend to you that you memorize the 1st 20 or 30 elements. By doing so, you will have most of the building blocks of chemistry memorized, similar to memorizing the main sequence of stars in re astronomy. The periodic table separates metals from gases, shows the groups who tend to have so many bonding combinations, etc.

Dmitri Mendeleev is one of my favorite scientists ever

That wasn't his only achievement. He was so smart that he grouped the elements in such a way that it wouldn't disturb the group of noble gasses (group 18, period 1-7)
Noble gasses were not discovered at the time and when they were, an eighteenth group was created to not disturb the existing order.

I did learn this in school. My whole class did. You can even read it in almost any generic high school chemistry textbook. It's not uncommon knowledge, just forgotten or not paid attention to.

This is no Genius, his descendant from the future came to him through time machine and gave him the Modern Table.
That is why he kept (V) before (Cr) irrespective of atomic mass. It can clearly be seen its a forceful act.
OR IF NOT,
HE IS LEGENDARY LEVEL GENIUS

It amazes me that catagorizing the elements with thier various characteristics helped to predict future elements that could be found

Shower curtains? Seriously, sheldon is the only one i think would put periodic table as a background.
