Mink DeVille - Stand By Me (From "Live at Montreux 1982")

1982 found Mink DeVille in the middle of the transition from their CBGBs New York punk origins to a more subtle, rootsier sound blending soul, R & B, Cajun and other influences. Lead by the late Willy DeVille, whose unique style and inimitable gravelly voice always made them stand out from the crowd, Mink DeVille released their first album in 1977 and immediately had a huge hit with the track Spanish Stroll. By the time of this appearance at Montreux in 1982 they were touring in support of the fourth album Coup De Grace and the show features tracks from across their career to that point as well as a couple of unreleased gems including their cover of the Ben E King classic Stand By Me.

One of the most talented and at the same time one of the most criminality overlooked, underrated and a pure genius. Makes me sick to my stomach when posers and hacks get the glory & $$$$ while Willy went unnoticed except for his true fans and people who knew what real musicial and talent is.

In 1994, he came to play to La Coruña, NW of Spain... It was late at night, probably around 10 pm, and he was being interviewed by some newspaper men from our local newspaper in a dark corner in the middle of the Promenade where people go running /jogging at night, just 5 meters from the sea. Even though I enjoyed Mink quite a lot, I had decided not to go to the gig that night, and instead, I went for a run, as I used to do mostly every night. All the time I was running, I had his music on my head powering my pace, and then I came to the dark corner where he was with the journalist. The place was empty, and the group looked at me passing by, at a decent speed (I was unaware who they were🤔), but I was surprised they turned their faces to see me... Next morning, I was reading the newspaper and unexpectedly I came across the interview - there I found out that he was really there last night - and the article says something like : "in a moment, we see a runner pass by, and Willie says" you can not be a rocker and a runner at the same time ". I am 99'9x 100 sure he meant me, there were nobody else that late... Anyway, as I tribute to the man, I was, it Was me😊, and I feel so honored he said it🎸🎸. (By the way, I keep on rocking, .. I won't break that promise😉Love up the way to heaven, heroe of mine 😍😇

Underrated fabulous talent...probably mismanaged, but also the long time heroin addiction, which he kicked. He has the recognition of many artists. Perhaps if had collaborated with Mark Knopfler sooner....gone way too young... RIP Willy...

Such a unique voice and amazing talent, always felt he never got the recognition in the states he deserved, maybe it was because of the drugs. Amazing band, could listen to them all day. RIP Willy

this is the most amazing version of stand by me!!the guy with the sax is an ancient god, he is dementia in pure state, almost had a car crash today because i was listening to this song on maximum volume.WOW!
