Red Wing 877 Boot Review: The 8-Inch Legend

* All the videos I mention in this video:

I finally take a look at Red Wing's beloved 877, the 8-inch beauty that took the boot world by storm in the 1950s and has remained largely unchanged ever since. It's so important and iconic that the world's largest boot is an 877, which I visited at their flagship store in Red Wing, Minnesota. So is the 877 worth it? Well, it's a very different feeling to their other boots, and quite different even to the 875.

If you cannot decide between 875 or 877, go for the 8-inch boot. I do not recommend changing the eyelets. Switch to a set of longer laces.

If you ever had a pair of sock/slippers when you were five years old, this is what these boots feel like after they break in.

There is no better fragrance in the world than the first few moments walking into the Red Wing HQ

Hello
Red Wing use to make the 866 Pecos 8 inch boot. They were very popular with truck drivers in Australia.

I happened to be in Red Wing, Minnesota this weekend, during the Redwing boot annual clearance sale from the factory. Yesterday I picked up a Pair of 877’s and a pair of Iron Rangers for $299. They’re factory seconds, but you can’t tell.

These boots are some of my favs. I just resoled with a new red midsole by Vibram and changed the white christy sole to a black christy sole… just because.

Thank you sir for the solid review of the 877. I’ve been looking into getting a pair of the 877 or the 10877 and you did a great job being informative and helpful. 😎

8" boots are where it's at if you live a blue collar life in a rural county, except in the summer when I wear my 6" boots in the shop or woobies the rest of the day.
If only they offered this in a plain toe like the Thorogood 4364 that I love so much I'd probably get a pair.
I don't necessarily hate moc toe boots and the 877 is an iconic classic boot, but I definitely prefer a plain toe.

The lack of speed hooks is kind off annoying but I'm no stranger to that and can live with it.

My store installed speed hooks right into the eyelets for free. I was very surprised and love these boots.

I had to add speed hooks to mine. I lost a lot of time lacing these up.

One small difference between the 875 and the 877 is the width of the tongue. The 875 has a narrower tongue which lies flat and gets an aesthetic pattern from the laces. The 877 has a much broader tongue which doesn't lay flat and has to be folded. Personally I don't like the broader tongue and found it to be a little uncomfortable.

These aren’t in their heritage line but are considered work boots so they come with a 30 day guarantee. I had mine installed with hooks on the top 4 eyes and it took about 2 week to get them back. Going a half size down with a medium thick insole made these boots a perfect fit. I had originally put in the thickest insole but after a couple weeks they still felt a little tight. My local redwing store swapped them out no questions asked. The customer service alone is worth the price

I’ve been wearing my 10877’s for 16 hours a day for the past three year. On my second set of soles. You’ll know how good these boots are when you have to where another boot for a week while getting new soles.
Best work boot ever

If you want a deal, get the work version of this boot, 10877 or 10875. They are 20 bucks CHEAPER, they don’t scratch up as easily, they have gunmetal eyelets, and they have that beautiful Red Wing logo stamp on the side.

Just got my first pair of redwings a couple of months ago. Think I bought the last pair in my size in Australia. Got for the 10877 (with the black eyelets) and love them. Just find it hard to get the tongue to lay neatly when I lace them up. Not sure if that’s normal or not but regardless they look cool as hell
