Preparing the adsorbent for flash column chromatography

A video demonstration of a simple way to level the top layer of silica gel, alumina, etc. Setting up the column correctly is critical to ensure the success of a challenging separation.

1. add adsorbent to the glass column
2. equilibrate the column by passing several column volumes of solvent
3. release pressure and disturb the top layer using method shown in video
4. pressurize until solvent level reaches the adsorbent bed
5. add sand then load compound
6. begin separation
