DUBROVNIK
Dubrovnik (Croatian Dubrovnik, until 1918 - Ragusa, Italy) Ragusa is a city in Croatia, the administrative center of Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
The population is 42.6 thousand people (2011). It is located in the south of Dalmatia, on the Adriatic coast. It is subject to earthquakes.
The seaport, the international airport "Dubrovnik". Seaside resort. The old town on a precipitous cape over the sea is surrounded by fortified walls, consists of stone buildings of the 14th-18th centuries, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It was founded in the 7th century. Since 1358 under the Latin name of Ragusa - the capital of the Dubrovnik Republic. "Slavonic Athens" is one of the centers of development of Serbian and Croatian culture and language, as well as the now extinct Dalmatian language.
The Latin name of the city, which is still fixed in Italian, Ragusa (Latin Ragusa, and also Ragusium), comes from the name of the Adriatic island on which the first settlement of refugees from Epidaurus (modern Cavtat) was founded, who left their city Under the pressure of the Avaro-Slav invasion, or after the devastating earthquake of 649. Opposite the island of Ragusa, on the mainland, at the foot of the Srdj mountain, in the same 7th century a Slavic settlement appeared, named Dubrava (in honor of the surrounding oak groves), later transformed into Dubrovnik.
Throughout the centuries, both names were used in parallel in everyday speech: Ragusa, as a rule, was called the descendants of the Romanesque population, Dubrovnik - southern Slavs. However, in official records management, the city was long called exclusively Ragusa, despite the fact that the Romanesque Dalmatian language, spoken by the refugees from Epidaurus, practically disappeared from use in the 16th century. The reasons for this lie in the fact that historically the official language of these places until the middle of the XV century remained Latin, and later - the Italian language. For the first time, Dubrovnik is mentioned under the Slavic name in the "The Banner of the Ban Kulina" - the charter of the Bosnian Ban Kulin from 1189, and the officially Slavic name "Dubrovnik" began to be used only since 1918, in connection with the liberation of the South Slavic lands from Austrian domination.
