Windows 11 Event: Biggest announcements & my thoughts

Microsoft announced Windows 11 today. We'll walk through all the biggest announcements and I'll also share my thoughts and reactions. Windows 10 was supposed to be the last version of the operating system, although PC sales have recently increased and Microsoft had a change of heart.
We'll walk through the new start menu and why I like the addition of Recommended. We'll explore the new look and feel, some of the new themes, how windows snap and how you can snap entire groups. Next, we'll check out the pick up where you left off feature, following by the personalized feed with widgets. We then jump to virtual desktops, which now allow you to customize the background image. Although Windows 10 had virtual desktops, you were unable to customize the background. Next, we look at performance improvements and input improvements. Microsoft Teams is now being integrated directly into Windows in place of Skype. We then shift gears and talk about gaming on Windows 11. Gaming is now improved with Auto HDR and the addition of direct storage, which bypasses the CPU to the GPU. Lastly, we talk about the new Microsoft Store, which now allows the addition of Android apps. To finish off, I share my thoughts on the new OS, what timing might look like, and whether it'll be a free upgrade.

That music between every announcement or feature! Snap I am obsessed with it!

The biggest turn-off is that Windows 11 requires TPM v. 2.0 which is only supported on very new devices.
You can find the requirements on their site.

Thanks Kevin. You always have been a go to person for all things Microsoft. But I think you have surpassed yourself on this one. I’m particularly happy about the performance upgrades.

Kevin you are a legend! I really love your videos. They are so informative and the quality is underrated. Top-Notch as always.
And I guess the task bar of Windows 11 is similar to Mac and Linux.

All of the features require me to send date out of my network, and out of my country. As I am not a US citizen, the US Patriot Act then allows for warrantless access to my data. How a country that toutes itself on freedoms and rights allows that sort of law to remain means that I refuse to send anything that I don't see a clear benefit on (syncing setting and transferring between devices isn't enough for me).

Start Menu: it is not a start menu that has all your programs accessible, just an item that shows a few. I have 20 video/photography programs, 10 office applications, several programming, multiple chat clients, and my 18 'general' items. That is just what I have pinned, as I generally use them at least once a month.

Taskbar... just makes me shudder, making me think of a apple computer. Have heard that can set it to be on the left again... that is good.

Themes have been around for a very long time, and it is not anything new. Windows 95 had it.

I do agree the snapping is a nice feature.

I can type much faster than I can speak, and it is much more private. I almost never use a speech to text engine.

SKype went away when MS decided to start adding ads to the interface and removed the API support. I know that was when I stopped using it as my main interface. I think it had the wide acceptance due to the fact it forced everyone that used MS IM before onto it, along with those that had been using it before they bought it. Teams I find they are trying to have it integrated in too many systems. It causes us techs headaches with it.

THe 'universal' apps... I much prefer the control over my applications. I prefer applications that I can do something more than reset/reinstall on. By that is me, and I am a tech.

Changing the interface is something I am on both sides of. I like changes, but I also don't care for the learning curve that it causes. I don't see enough that I like of this.

Likely, I will upgrade when my work starts to upgrade their systems to 11. I am not going to be an early adopter of it, even though my system is fully ready for it.

Thanks Kevin. A good video at the right length. Some other videos are either too long or too simplified.

With the exception of 'pick up where you left off' everything that you mentioned, as well as what you didn't mention is "fluff" or unwanted "bloatware" in my opinion. TPM v2.0: NO. MS account required: NO. MS Teams: NO. Personalized feed, MS doesn't know me: NO. I can't help but view this new OS as nothing more than W10 with better sales potential built in.
Thanks for the great, concise review!

Thanks, Kevin. I'm actually interested in the new Windows, which I can't say was true last time.... I'm particularly looking forward to Teams integration, improved performance and a better store. Hopefully it will be ready for September.
