Brilliant and concise explanation of Grice paper with additional comments. Thank you, Mr.Cushing. Those explanations worked a big deal to understand the introductions of philosophy of language. Would be nice, if you could explain Locke's essay on the concerning to human understanding too... if you haven't yet. Thank you again for this knowledge being scattered to us.

Just to add to the praise that others have already given - this is a very cogent and accessible series of lectures covering stuff that as someone who lacks a philosophical training I have long been aware of but found difficult to know where to start unravelling - a sincere thank you to Simon

To lecture on the concept of meaning is to enter into the theatre of human kind where meanings are endlessly produced in a variety of ways, all at the behest of the intender. And it is the intention, be it verbal, such as words, sentences, or other human effects, or nonverbal, such as signs, gestures, to create something wherein meaning lies. Breaking meaning down into its multitude of manifestations is the idle pastime of academia. A nonhuman natural event only has meaning when bestowed by the bewildered mind of myth makers and sorcerers apprentices.

Russell, Frege and the rest of that group, it seems to me, would be more accurately said to have argued for word meaning not sentence meaning (which was conceived of as, in turn, a formulaic implication of word meaning). Ironically, though Grice opposed the view that words have meaning outside of the context of the speaker’s intentions, it strikes me that he failed to heed his own assertion when it came to trying to define the concept of ‘meaning’ - hence getting himself into that years long mess of layering intricacy upon intricacy within his attempted definition to the point of its apparent uselessness which was somewhat mentioned in passing in the video.

These “projects” shouldn’t have their devotees. They are both true in a certain respect.
