How to Harvest Canna Lily Seed and Prepare It For Planting! 🌿 (Gardening Shorts)

Canna lilies are expensive plants at the garden center but are practically free to grow when you harvest the seed from an existing plant! This #shorts gardening video shows you how to identify the Canna lily seed pod, harvest the seed pods, and prepare them to sprout by dropping them in boiling water for a few minutes!

Once the hard seed coat of the Canna is placed in hot water, the seed coat will crack. Cracking the canna lily seed coat is vital because it will help the seed sprout! Seeds must absorb water to grow but sometimes a very hard coat makes it impossible for the seeds to germinate~!

Thanks for the boiled water trick! I’ve been using a file for years and it’s very time consuming ❤

Great video. I would wait a few more weeks for my Canna Lily’s seeds getting ready to harvest. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the tips! My canna lilly is still pretty small, about 3.5 inches tall. So this is really helpful! I can definitely use these tips once my canna lily is fully grown. ❤

I haven't started any from seed - at least not intentionally - but if the Canna glauca make seeds this year, I may see what kind of hybrid I have managed to make Mixing Glauca, Indica x Purpurea, Edulis and Australia.

Will the seeds produce the same color flower as the mother?

When should I plant the seed for the plant to be ready for spring planting?

Now if the flowers fall early without any interference will the seed pods still form, know this is an old video but might as well try right?

How long does it take the shell to crack in boiling water? I've seen others use the filing method to crack through the shell before soaking them for 4 or 5 days to start the germination, but this sounds easier if it doesn't harm the seed inside.

Thank you for the video! I am in zone zone 5. Can I plant them right away so it can start to grow and bloom for the coming spring?

I like the hot water trick, maybe it would work on lotus seeds. I just dumped mine in my angel trumpet's pot bc at the time I didn't wanna do trays. Now 1yr later I have babies sprouting :3.

So, they don’t have to be stratified?

Do they need to go through any process of cooling before germinating?
