Funny how the assumption holding the reasoning together is that the free market option is almost devoid of strongly negative consequences. By putting the same zeal in examining ALL the imaginable consequences of the purely, predation-entailing free market option, we quickly end up with a lose-lose situation of a much grander scale and riskier nature to the socio-economic fabric itself. There is only so much abuse the weaker parties can take from the stronger ones before all hell breaks lose.

The cities with the most strict rent controls have the highest rents and happen to be the wealthiest cities in the United States (New York, San Francisco, Santa Monica). Sorry, arguments against Rent Control in this video series don't hold up to the data.

One major factor in housing affordability is zoning and how zoning and NIBYS block new/ denser development. Shortages in housing supply tend to drive up cost. Gentrification is also diving prices up, but this also benefits the folks who own land or buildings in the areas that are now going up in value. The Obama Center in Chicago will make a lot of African American Families wealthy when they sell or are able to collect higher rents.
