To Happybirdr: Pin, pin, and pin long seams because of the way a sewing machine works. The feed dogs on the bottom pull the lower fabric away from the sewer. The presser foot on top pushes the top piece of fabric back toward the sewer. Thus, if you do not pin, by the time you've sewn to the end of the seam, your two pieces of fabric will no longer be the same length. Or, one will be wavey (or ruffled) and the other will be stretched. As an experiment, with scrap fabric try not pinning and see what happens. The try with pinning. Good luck sewing. Virginia in Ohio
