Spantan is a safe, elegant, affordable and functional cast-iron wood splitting knife. Using both hands for added stability and force, the weight of the tool can be used to cleave through small logs and split them along the grain to make small sticks and wood shavings for kindling to light a fire. The double-handled kindling knife has knuckle guards to protect your hands when the blade is pushed through the wood and has an anodised zinc finish for corrosion resistance and long life. Made in Sweden to last for generations. 1 lb unit

Never saw that before I thought it was for unbarking or making wood shaves with it

It needs a shallower grind, like full flat grind . And a bit more weight. It is basically a spring and bounces off the wood so it needs to be stiffer, to work like it is marketed.

At first when I saw it I thought: -" ah, a drawknife ".
But then you said how they promoted it and the way it's supposed to be used.
Because as a drawknife it would be awesome at making splinters :) .

I find them more useful for fleshing hides.

that seems like a lot of work mate! I think I will stick with my Husqvarna hatchet and a Laplander saw, thanks for the heads up, brilliant to see someone else from the UK doing well with the bushcrafting, I especially enjoyed your cheap Chinese knife VS Mora video, I nearly bought one until it broke! all the best, Keith

Hi Dave,
That's one of the silliest things I've ever seen. LOL
"It should be idiot proof!" Exactly! :D
Why not just use a small hatchet or use your bushcraft knife with a baton?
BTW, I love your patented Humble Trekker log holder stick! I've tried that and it works perfectly! Best $19.95 I ever spent! :D
Cheers, Duane

That's a poorly made draw knife, not a wood splitter!

Edit: OK, I was gonna call you out and say that's not what that tool was intended for, but I've checked out the web site and the lunatic was using it for just that. It's like he saw a draw knife and thought, I can plagiarise this and make it into something original. He failed.

One thing I would say is that when he tries starting to split and hits the wood, he doesn't put his fingers inside the handles, rather he puts them around them (marginally less chance of rapped knuckles, marginally more chance of banging your fingers off the wood). He also uses both hands on the handles when he's able to start the split.

Ultimately, it is still a sub optimal design for a sub-optimal application. There's a reason we have Mauls, Axes, Hatchets, Froes, Parangs, Machetes and Becker BK9 style blades.

That thing looks to be about as much use as a chocolate teapot. The word you were looking for at the end is Bullworker :D

thought it looked like a draw knife too. Guessing from the site that it's for indoors by the fire side. Perhaps for a little bit of kindling on occasion. Maybe to look a bit decorative? Probably designed with bone dry softwood in mind seeing as the handles are effectively springs. Using it as you have really showed that is not for use in the woods or away from medical attention at all. Or after a couple of beers. That the site says the weight of the tool can be used to cleave through small logs is likely to lead to a few interesting moments. But hey, it's got knuckle guards so it must be safe right?

I'll stick to my favourite combo: Terävä Skrama & Jääkäripuukko 140.

Dave it looks like it's meant to stand over and just push down with one hand on each handle . But why make it I have no idea give me my hatchet or hawk and leave this gadget hanging on the store wall . Happy Trails

What's the point of that??!! I'll stick to a heavy cleaver and a hatchet. Cheers Dave.

That looks more like a “tinder shaver” vs a “kindling maker” 🧐

Would probably work best if you just took it in both hands and bear on it with your weight, arms straight bending from the waist. A bit like the CPR motion.
