When you realize that Grandpa Gohan was Goku’s first kill... that’s heavy, dude...

It'd be nice if Grandpa Gohan made a comeback in Super and met Gohan lol

I'm seeing a lot of comments on here of people are asking "Why doesn't he wish his grandfather back?" This tells me you guys have never watched the original Dragonball series. Goku met his grandfather again at Baba's tournament. He fought in the tournament to find the last dragonball to help revive his friend Upa's father. Upa felt bad and was willing to let Goku wish his grandfather back but Gohan refused and said he perferred to stay in the afterlife since he met some new friends there. You guys should go back and watch that series or at least watch some of the clips on here.

Least Goku knows he didn't mean to kill his adoptive father

You gotta understand how terrifying this scene was for me as a kid, being as a 50-100 ft tall ape is chasing after you with no intention to stop till you’re dead, it makes it feel like you’re in Goku’s shoes

EDIT: After 5 years and nearly 200 replies, I am now aware of every interaction Goku had with his grandpa post this scene.
...
"I'm sorry grandpa. I don't know if there's a way to make it up to you, but I'll try..."
Aaaand he never mentioned him again.

This scene was beautiful, Goku connecting the dots and realizing the truth, that he was the Ape monster that killed his grandfather. The way Goku accepts this tragic truth and apologizes to his grandfather is something powerful, it's something that I never appreciated as a child, but can as an adult. It's unbelievably difficult to simply accept the awful things that happen, but Goku just did it, in just a moment he accepted that he ended his own grandfather's life, and was able to move on from it without agonizing over it. Most would fall into despair over realizing something so awful, but Goku understands that it was an accident, and that grandpa Gohan still loves him. I remember someone once saying that Goku not being smart is one of his strengths, as it prevents him from overthinking and having any excess negative thoughts. In a way, Goku is more enlightened than the most educated people.

the ocean dub version of this was so trash they had Goku think vegeta was the ozaru who did that at the tournament and killed his grandfather lol

😢It wasn’t your fault, Goku. Your grandpa still loves you.

It amazes me that Toriyama never mined out this scene for all the emotional gold it has. Goku has believed the lie of the random ape that killed his dad for over 20 years and now he learned that because of his inability to listen to his grandpa, he got his grandpa killed and with his own hands. The first person that Goku loved after his head injury and he personally killed him.
It'd be an easy excuse to have Goku meet up with Grandpa Gohan again with his many trips to other world or an arc about Goku processing this new info, but it just gets abandoned.

"i'm i'm the one who crushed my grandpa!"

the background music did not give that scene/line a thrill.

It is such a powerful scene.. hard to fathom the kind of emotions Goku was feeling at the moment.. fear, regret, and a lot of sudden realization all at the same time while he's battling his greatest competition at that time.. what luck!

“I don’t know if there’s any way I can make it up to you, but I’m gonna try.”

Such a touching line by one of the most positive characters ever created. He’s feels devastated and burdened by a guilty conscience, but it won’t stop him from doing what’s right.

I'm reading the comments about why didn't Goku revive Grandpa Gohan or Bardock, it just got me thinkin if those people ever watched Dragon Ball ._.

For the longest time I never read how Grandpa Gohan passed and then finally read how Goku accidentally turned into an ape and that's what caused it. After that I thought for the whole series Goku went on not knowing and then it sort' ve ticked me off until I saw this and now I feel tremendously sad at how Goku says hes sorry. The teary feels.

I'm sad that this it's never brought up again : Goku never confronts his friends about it, we never see him upset about this or even thinking about it again and even when he dies again there never was a scene of him talking to his Grandpa about it.
