BRAKE CALIPER COMPARISON: Origin8 Vise vs TRP Cycling HY/RD Mech/Hyd and brake cable tech talk.

In two previous videos we went over the Origin8 Vise and the TRP HY/RD highlighting the operation and technical aspects of each. Today we put them side by side and compare them based off of a metrics.
As as added bonus we take a look at standard brake cable housings and compression-less brake cable housings. If you aren't using them you probably should be.

Excellent vid, i am impressed by the Origin8 cable housing looks very competitive to Jagwire... I'm really glad I found your channel. i have had my eye on the HY/RD for a couple years did not even know the Origin8s existed

Brilliant presentation. Thanks for clearly answering all the questions.

I'm building a Motobecane Whipshop 853 framekit, it comes with a wheelset so it's not a frameset. Hydraulics were out simply because of the cost for hydraulic grifters. This changes things. I like the Origin 8's for the weight and the slimness(?). I've been running Extechs on my SS without issue, but they are not flat mount and that's what the 853 calls for. Good comparison, thanks.

Thanks for the great comparison video! Lots of excellent and useful info. I would just like to comment that I believe the HYRD should work with any short pull road lever. There is only 1mm difference of cable pull (7mm vs 8mm) between "new" and "old" road levers. MTB cable levers are roughly double the amount of pull, at 15mm. Long pull mtb levers will work with short pull calipers, but won't have the best feel. There are short pull flat bar/mtb type levers available, that will feel better with short pull road calipers, due to the correct pull ratio. 👍👍

Thank you so much. Never a place tell me what disc brake pad from Shimano or SRAM is compatible for TRP HY/RD

Thanks for the comparison video! Are these brakes easier to squeeze at the levers compared to fully mechanical brakes?

Thank you for a great video, can you change either brake pads & inspect the pads with out removing the wheel ? .

Do you think the TRP HY/RD would retain a short throw with Shimano Claris 8 speed levers? They use a design similar to the Shimano Ultegra 11 speed levers.

I have a two year old Poseidon X with Tektro discs. They're okay, but absolutely puny compared to the proper hydraulic brakes on my Stumpy. To have even 2/3 of that confidence on my gravel bike would be fantastic, but I definitely would like to retain a short-ish throw.

Upgrading to compression-less cables and TRP Spyre calipers with Shimano pads would be another more economical option, but I'm not sure how much punch it will provide.

My main concerns with the Origin8 calipers are the small volume of fluid and the lack of service-ability ...and where the heck can you buy them online?

I'd buy the HY/RD right now if I knew they wouldn't compromise the throw like I've seen in the Campy+HY/RD videos. I'm willing to give up a little but that looks like too much, if that's how they will work with my Claris levers.

Hi bro...
I'm using flat handle bar on my 20" folding bike that originally comes with mechanical disc break tektro md c510 single actuated caliper together with tektro 2 finger lever pull.

Since my bike frame is originally flat mount type (front fork and rear stay) I'm planning to upgrade my break system to flat mount trp hd c710 silver caliper very soon. Because I think it would be easier installation just to switch the caliper plug and play right..??

Regards to longer pull problem as many people came across..
My question is by turning the barrel adjuster (both caliper and lever) to bring the pad closer to the disc without rubbing them does this method solved the problem...??

Is this good idea or shall I completely change to fully hydraulic brake system like shimano...??
What is your thought and please advice me.

Thank you
Have a nice day..

i wonder why lever feel is the same on my both levers front and rear equipped with trp hyrds and regular brake housings on my road bike. it is more than x2 difference in its' length

Thanks for this.
I am looking at converting my old 90's GT Palomar to disc brakes and 27.5 rims. Love the frame and don't want to get rid of it.
I don't want to go full hydro, as the frame is better suited to cable set up.
Looks like if I want to go with long flat bar levers, my option it to use the Origin8 mtb version, otherwise can I use the TRP and the Origin8 road with bmx (2 finger) or cyclocross Crosstop Brake Levers as they are meant for road style calipers?
Thanks.

I think you did your test the better way by removing the brake pad variable.

How does this compare to a full hydraulic setup?

Funny that I can not do these moving with shimano slr brake housing like you do with you Standard brake housing. Very strange! It's not even near that flexible like your compresionless housing

на trp hy/rd нет настройки троса! в ролике трындит что есть.

Trp are far more superior than the el cheap origin...field maintenance, stopping power and heat distribution...try and fix a hydro cable in the middle of the if the fluid runs out you can still use the brakes, ...no air bubbles no sponginess ....and you can't compare the weight ....
