This can happen in contemporary pop music. Sooner or later two or more songs can and will start to sound similar. If you're lucky, you'll hear two songs that sound almost exactly the same. I play guitar. Once I made up this finger picking pattern on my acoustic. Then one day I heard a song by Hozier with a fingerpicking pattern that sounded literally the same with some variances. Did Hozier steal it from me? Lol of course not. Somehow we were on the same wave length and wrote two similar sounding melodies. Not a big deal. I'm pretty sure this is what's happening with Ed Sheeran.

I'm suing everyone above and below me for stealing comments I thought about posting.

They are pretty similar, but it's not note for note

I'm not a fan of either, but yes they sound similar. However, many songs can sound similar but that doesn't mean it was stolen.

Okay, for those who are just blindly saying "Matt Cardle who?" as an argument against the lawsuit, no matter if Ed Sheeran did steal the melody from "Amazing" or not, you suggesting that if you are more successful than another artist, the merits of the songwriters of the song should go unnoticed (no matter how good or bad you think the song is) and the more successful artist should get away with it. I'm not saying Ed knowingly copied the melody, but you cannot deny that the melody of the chorus sounds the same. And just to make it clear, it is the two songwriters Tom Leonard and Matt Harrington who filed the lawsuit, NOT Matt Cardle. So the apparent hate directed towards Matt is completely unwarranted, and it is also apparent that this hate is fueled by the denial of Ed Sheeran fans. Just because you are lesser known or if the song you wrote for another artist is not as commercially successful, doesn't make it okay for another artist or songwriter who has seen far more success to copy your work. (You would probably side differently if this happened to different artists you did not care about and had your say.)

Well, I'll say this. If "Blurred Lines" can be considered infringement in CA, Sheeran's got ZERO chance of winning this case.

Did Ed Sheeran song was inspired by Matt Cardle. Maybe. But it's stupid to think that is idea was stolen. Did Matt Cardle song came out of thin air or was it also inspired from previous songs? It's fair to say that most songs are written and probably inspired by other previous songs too.

anyone who knows music - knows this a blatant rip-off and I hope the actual writers get their compensation.

I get that this part of song may sound somewhat similar but if you listen to both songs in full, they are no where near the same at all

Ed sheeran to matt ; "chat shit get banged"

There is a finite amount of chords combinations and lyric pitches. Some are bound to sound the same

To be honest, all songs of this genre sound the same.

I just don't hear the similarity. If this is theft, then all music is theft

Why did it take his so long to complain?

I am convinced that a large portion of people who say they aren't similar, or are just coincidence are literally tone deaf or have the audio version of "face blindness". Like, a legitimate deficiency that prevents them from being able to hear the obvious.

The irony here being that Amazing is itself a rip-off of Run by Snow Patrol (I wish I could add that Johnny McDaid, a member of Snow Patrol and the co-writer of Photograph, wrote Run too, but he joined the band three years after its release)

Personally I agree with Ed I don't think you should be able to copyright chord sequences. This was pretty close but don't think Ed deserved to get sued. Still ed wrote the lyrics (and other people) and they are much better than Matt Cardles song.

Tbh think Matt might have been a bit jealous of how great Ed's song went...

everyone knows ed sheeran sings like that, with those pauses... LOL

They do sound alike, people are clearly just supporting Ed because he's Ed and Matt isn't as well known at all.
