Yup, a big clue is when anything looks or seems even slightly off (even if you're not sure why). It never hurts to skip clicking on a link and instead go straight to the website you know is right. For phone calls, you can hang up and call the correct phone number.

That is why you should make links to your banks and business you use in your browser's bookmarks bar. Then, only use those links to go to the company you "supposedly" got an email from. Those sites have their own internal messaging that will have the same message you got if they sent it to you. If the message is not there, then the email was a scam.

The basic rule of thumb, and I know people hate calling, but close the email and type/click bookmark of the site they're saying is hacked. Then, if it does look like something is wrong, call them. Never ever ever ever ever click a link in an email. Even if it is from your BFF. The risk/benefit ratio is so one-sided.
