On the Day of Atonement, as described in Leviticus 16, the Israelites followed a sacred ritual involving two goats. The high priest would cast lots to determine their fate—one goat was sacrificed for the sins of the people, and the other, known as the scapegoat or “Azazel,” symbolically carried the nation’s sins into the wilderness. After confessing the wickedness of the Israelites over the scapegoat, the high priest sent it away, symbolically removing their sins from the community. For Christians, this act foreshadows Christ, who takes on the sins of the world to bring redemption.

But why a goat? A lamb is sacrificed and he is always compared to a lamb. You don’t ever hear him compared to a goat in the scriptures. There has to be more to it than this one reference.
