This coming Saturday, April 22nd, marks the annual Earth Day, and South Korea's environment ministry has declared that April 21st to the 27th is a special week to raise awareness about environmental change.
On the day of April 22nd, South Korea's government buildings and local landmarks such as the Sungnyemun Gate, Gwangan Bridge, and Hwaseong Fortress will turn their lights off for 10 minutes starting from 8 PM.
By doing so, 53 tons of Freon gas,. equivalent to the amount of carbon absorbed by 8-thousand,. 30-year-old pine trees in one year, will be reduced.
It has been 53 years since Earth Day was created, in response to the environmental crisis triggered by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill accident in California, the United States.
