Mine works just fine, the sensor light comes on, but the screen is dark. If I look at it _VERY_ carefully, I can actually see the readout on the screen, but it is not illuminated.

Still not working, so I'll buy a cheap one next time.

Great idea, but terrible solder joint, a so called "cold solder" joint. It needed just a tiny bit of flux, ideally rosin, not acid. Since you have a soldering iron, it would you should have a little bit of flux, or even a short piece of rosin core solder. Just adding a little bit of solder, with the flux would make it shiney and reliable. Cold solder joints are not reliable, even if they work initially.
