Yes! I love this book so much. I always wonder how Pynchon can have such a vast, vast knowledge of esoteric culture. He mentions the courier riding a “fixed gear track bike”, specifically not calling it a “fixie” which 99% of people would but somehow he knew that would be wrong.

This novel reveals something new every time I read it, and - as a huge Pynchon fan - I can see where you're coming from rating it so highly. Last time I read it, I decided to go whole-hog and pair it with my first watch of the (particularly Pynchonian) anime Serial Experiments Lain. Strongly recommend it to you, if you've not seen it!

Fantastic as always, sir, Pynchon, Cormac McCarthy and William Gaddis are the apex of American Literature in my humble opinion.

What blows my mind is the book so contemporary and filled with pop culture Easter eggs was written by a man in his late 70s. I just imagine a 70s something old person meticulously researching and finding meaning in what the kids are into nowadays. Definitely the best novel of the 21st century and so vastly overlooked by critics and scholars. If GR defined the collective consciousness and the paranoia at the time around and following WW 2, Bleeding Edge does the same for its age if not better. ( I would say better because it is 10 times more accessible )

You got me in Pynchon talks in this novel about the psychological profiles of various pokemon, and then made me want to read it because of everything you said after.

The most important question nobody seem to bring up: will Pynchon write one last book before passing? The man was born in 1937. He's got quite the longevity. He's my idol.
Great video.

As a European who never even visited NY, Jeannie Berlin's narration for Audible added a lot for me, while reading. While Gravity's Rainbow remains my favourite novel, Bleeding Edge is indeed a treat. I liked your review and agreed with most everything you said. Thank you.

I can relate to much of your sentiments surrounding the nostalgia of the period. There was a sense of optimism and hope at the time, that was horribly transformed into terror. Pynchon did a great service to write a novel like Bleeding Edge to capture this feeling, perhaps similar to the hope of the World Fair in Against the Day. Thanks for the review!

Is Bleeding Edge the first "Vaporwave" novel? I've always found the novel to be reminiscent of the work by certain Vaporwave artists, James Ferraro's Far Side Virtual in particular; mainly through their use of nostalgia, our newfound relationship with virtual spaces, and the totally unveiling event that was 9/11.

Thomas Pynchon is such a great writer sometimes just a question mark makes me laugh! In this book your holding - on page 372 - there is the following exchange between characters, Maxi, the protagonist, and Fiona, the daughter of a friend of hers, at a Halloween party:
Maxi: "Fiona, nice getup, help me out, you're supposed to be -"
Fiona": "Misty?"
Maxi: "The girl in Pokèmon. And this is-"...
The "up talk" always makes me laugh! Pynchon isn't just a person aware of his surroundings more then any of us, but just a great writer....

Great review. I wish I had liked the book more. That’s what I get for listening to audiobooks I guess, as it’s hit and miss. I can get through so many more that way though. I’m going to recommend The Perpheral and Agency by William Gibson as I would love to hear you review either one. I think he nails the future better than anyone.
