Public Health Informatics: 'translating' knowledge for health

When people who are working toward a common goal do not speak the same language, they need a translator. Public health data come in many “languages,” and informaticians are specialists in the science of translation.

Translators need to know more than just the literal definition of words— they need to know what is most important for the various parties to understand, based on their different needs and motivations.
