The Volvo ES90 marks a much-anticipated return to the saloon bodystyle for Volvo and we’ve been to see an early unveil of the new model. Packed with tech, boasting a beautiful interior and with a competitive price tag, this might just be a worthwhile alternative to the BMWs, Audis and Mercedes-Benz’s of this world. CAR magazine's James Dennison is your guide.

Would you buy the ES90 over a BMW i5, Mercedes-Benz EQE or Audi A6 e-Tron?

This design is stunning. No split headlights, no light bars, no gimmicks ❤

It's the most beautiful car .out there.
Ive always loved Volvo för there design.
The only one i couldn't get on with was the S and V 90 .

I am sure that more people would buy a station wagon version.

dont like the "taxi-sign". But I do hope they will make a wagon version of this!

What’s the difference of the ES90 compared to a Polestar 4?

I must be getting old and jaded, but I think I've concluded that I will avoid cars from 2024 and onwards as all these "safety systems" are just a genuine pain in the backside to live with. I've got a Kia EV9 now and it is driving me insane. Even with all the safety systems turned off it still gets confused in inclement weather, it still bings at me if I don't adhere perfectly to the lane markings, even turning on the lane keep assist without warning if I've been driving on a snowy country road for a while. That was a joy at 80kph on snowy roads.

Was very fond of integrated dash electronics of yore. Now it's a "stack it and sticky back" approach with these screens and displays. It's like it was an afterthought. Have all of the previous Volvo interior design specialists been kidnapped?

Ok it looks really good, Volvo did it again 🤟🤩🌍
Reminds me of for me the best EV out there the Polestar 2.
And James yes finally it's not another SUV, now Volvo just need to make estate Cross Country version, 😍😍😍🤟⚡🙏

Looks good - but increasingly I'm not sure how keen I am on data harvesting and over the air updates. I want manufacturers focussing on range and genuine driving dynamics on an EV saloon and hatchback, and minimal driving aids or other tech I don't need

Volvo making life difficult for Polestar, especially if it rides properly. Very nice.

If Volvo still had ‘an uncompromising approach to safety’ they would provide a driver interface that enables easier, more intuitive control of the car. Their mastery of safety was a great USP for the company but now they seem to want to be kings of data harvesting.
The car doesn’t look bad but given the space for passengers, the boot is disappointingly small.

Gives me hope for the upcoming Alfa Romeo Giulia. Though now I wish Alfa Romeo had been sold to the Chinese. This looks stunning

Looks more crossover than Saloon tbh...

Looks kind of bulky and packed full of tech that is helpful in some ways, but also too intrusive and clever for its own good. Cars at the moment are not very interesting and too similar with their huge touchscreens and huge weight.

Errrr no. ”Sporty sedans” have been & between.. 😂

Another sales disaster. Equally pointless as the S90 sedan.
