I visited the ruins in December 1968. I was a young man then, but I have never forgotten my visit there; I somehow felt the history when I walked among the ruins. I camped with my colleagues out on the plain below Persepolis, our tents had frost on them in the morning. I'm pretty sure we would not be allowed to camp in the same place nowadays. I had come from the south, via Isfahan and then Shiraz - wow, those ancient cities! The two weeks I spent in Iran has stayed in my head through all these years, maybe because it was Winter and we were often very cold. We drove up to Terrain and then north-west and into Turkey and on up to the Black Sea.

The visit to Persepolis was a genuine highlight of the trip to Iran. The scale of the buildings gave strong a indication to how magnificent the city must have looked. The ornate stone carvings were striking. Really something worth seeing.

*_Alexander regretted burning persepolis because even when it was emptied and burned it was still more splendid than all greece combined_*

ty for the video and the great quality.
but i get alot of weird comments from american young men ignoring any fact from that era! it seem that americans never read and learn about ancient middle east in school, they belive everything started at ancient greece ( which it self developed after conquest of persia, what became golden age of greece was the end of golden age of persia) im sure these does make seens if western society start to tell truths about other nations history.

is it just me or this art is very similar to the Assyrian art of Mesopotamia i mean those two statues at the gate are identical to the Assyrian winged bull known as "Lamassu" !!

it seems they took technicians from egypt, after cambysis had made the country and the famous library of Alexandria in Egypt destroyed by given orders to have everything destroyed, including Egyptians temples.they could almost feel strangely the inspiration of egypt monuments and war chariots, gods behind this Persian monuments and architecture.

I can't help but wonder why the government of Iran does not rebuild this. It would be a must see for historians & visitors from around the world. Of course, not build on the exact historical location- just next to it.

I noticed some statues are severely defaced and yet retains its body undamaged. Any significant reason for this? thanks.
