Man that is a really awesome thing you did. I think to combat the awkwardness, don’t be afraid to say what you are doing in a way that doesn’t give away the payment thing. Like “hey I’m Tyler I run a YouTube channel about cars and I’m collecting data from random people about what their car payments are in today’s volatile car market.” They may be more prone to letting you know what it is. I’ve lived in the Midwest my entire life and unfortunately as the years progress, I can’t say that time has been economically kind to this area. We see these strangers day in and day out and never know the struggles of our neighbors, especially during the holidays.
