John Butler ‘Discovering Stillness – Part 1’ Interview by Iain McNay.
Author of ‘Wonders Of Spiritual Unfoldment’ and Mystic Approaches.’ His loves were farming and meditation. Tells his story of spiritual unfoldment and how he discovered stillness. It was not always an easy path for him and he went through periods of depressions and hopelessness.
‘Realisation is not a personal attainment – it usually comes at times of deep prayer or quietness when the mind is clear of personal me…’
‘I’m just a quiet old man of regular habits going up and down the hill to church each day, sitting on a bench when the weather is warm. I don’t speak much. Adventures are inside.’
‘From worldliness the absolute completion of Pure Being can seem out of touch, more theoretical than real. How can it be relevant to need? Once known however any return to ordinary worldly ways only seem to emphasise its loss.
Total longing brings its own reward but all feelings of achievement disappear. Incomparable gifts of Heavenly Grace instruct, inspire, save us from drowning in the world.’

"He was a quiet man, an artist. A craftsman . . ." sounds like the beginning of an epic story.

It's a beautiful thing when you look in the eyes of an old man and see the love of a young boy for his father still there.

Bedtime is never far off when I hear “He was a quiet man...”

This man is the primal grandpa, he is the living archetype of a wise, loving, aware counselor.

"So we heard about John because someone wrote in and told us about him..." God bless that good person.

I've had the honour of personally talking with this wonderful man.
He is wise, kind and patient, and I believe that we can learn a lot from him.

John, if you see this, best of regards to you!

Imagine a conversation between Bob Ross and John

Notice how Mr. Butlers stillness effects the interviewer as the conversation goes on. He starts off somewhat loud and gradually gets calmer and speaks more quietly as they go. A truly calm person will have that influence on the people around them.

The classic line we all love: "He was a quiet man, an artist, a craftsman".

He touched on something that slapped me in the face around 10 years ago. I have always loved solitude; even as a toddler I apparently used to run away from mum and just investigate the park as if she wasn't there while she watched me. My siblings are 5+ years older than me, so I remember looking out the window watching them go off to school. It hurt a little bit to be left like that, it probably felt like being abandoned (to my little mind), but I soon learned how to entertain myself which began a lifelong habit of enjoying solitude. What hit me 10 years back when I was almost 40, was that although I was in a bustling community of people, happy, friendly, very social, because there were cliques and a lot of the interactions were somewhat superficial, I felt very, very lonely, lonely in the middle of a bustling socially active crowd.

I realized that when I'm on my own, that gnawing sense of loneliness I felt in the crowd is completely absent. To me, being in a group of people but being unable to connect is a fate fare worse than being alone. There's contentment when I'm alone, but in that other situation there's pain and confusion.

What a genuine human being he is. I want to be more like him and less how the world tells me to be. :)

I found stillness, I sat still and watched most of this, then my boss made me get back to work

His voice is like the sound of tectonic plates shifting. Like trees creaking in the wind or the breeze caressing a hollow reed. The sound of the earth

Wow! He said basically his family grew up in isolation when he was a little boy and he communed with nature. It wasn't until he went to school with other children that he truly knew what isolation felt felt that!
