Wow! So much info! Thank you. I live in MS. We have 2 horses. I pick up and pile the manure and turn regularly with small tractor. Enjoying composting for garden.

I have admired your garden for so long. I live in Arkansas zone 6 b. Just getting seeds started right now. I am hoping they aren't so leggy this year.

Love your fountain! In filling your raised bed, how deep does the “good” dirt need to be for the roots of vegetables you’re raising?

Sorry that I am so late to watch this! (School)
1. CG…. Ha ha VANNA!
2. This was really helpful because people are writing in about the different tips and like I never thought about broccoli needing a 10 gallon pot. And also the tip about getting a yard of soil from a landscaping company. I’ve heard you say that before, but the reality is, I’m going to need a lot of soil for my 20 gallon pots that I got for these big tomato plants. My ace 55 is already growing his third set of leaves. 🦋 I’m afraid to pot it up in case we get one more cold spell, but we’re in the 80s now in Florida so I think I’m going to be safe. Anyway, I was not looking forward to buying all of that potting soil from Lowe’s.!!
It was a great energy and spirit in the livestream today— I could tell by the way you were commenting. Thank you for taking the time to do this for all of us.

After finally confirming that we are in a Zone 9a area, i realised i could have started sowing my seeds the last week of Jan - First week of Feb, so not to be too late off the bat i have been frantically planting the first 100 seeds the last couple of days. I won't be starting my squashes and sweetcorn, etc for another week or so.

It might seem a lot of seeds at the start but it's 30 x tomatoes (3 varieties so 10 of each. I like to give away some starts to neighbours and friends if i have extra) but one of my main goals this year was to plant more flowers from seed and not just rely on the bulb flowers to add a bit of colour.

Since 2018, when our kid brought back a sunflower from school, we have been saving the seeds to replant. We usually just try to get there before the birds and squirrels, take what we need for next year and leave the rest for the wildlife. In 2020/21, i started planting Nasturtiums. In 2022, i added Marigolds. Both are great for saving seeds.

This year i am adding Lobelia mix, Poppy's and wild bee flowers, like cornflowers as i love the blues and will go well with the alliums.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some volunteer marigolds along the outside of the patio slab bed area. I don't mind as it will give it that coastal look. I would love succulents in the cracks of the walls but i think it would be too cold here but i like the idea of mosses or lambs lettuce poking through growing in between the slab dirt. I like the idea of natural water retention control. The bigger plants will suck up the water as needed in the main bed but these plants serve to plug the holes in droughts and absorb excess water.

I don't know. I was watching the lady on Epic gardening channel as she has a greenhouse, i think in a colder area and was inspired by her alternative lawn ideas. We have shingle surrounding the long big bed and then at the edge by the grass i put my container plants for my squashes, Potatoes, strawberries, etc.

Come summer it always looks like a crazy mess of a jungle! lol I might see if i can buy those peat plugs before they are totally banned here, wedge them in the holes or crevices and water them to plant something there. Like i say, it's just an idea to pretty up the thick council "crazy paving" slabs we used to build the beds. lol

I looked at using coco coir an i think the last time i looked it was only a house brick size and was like £6! I think they are trying to lean us towards using seaweed but both have a high level of salt, which can change the PH of your soil.

Going back to making my garden look a bit prettier with colour in the chaos, what i do like is from the patio, the dwarf Acer (Japanese maple tree), hides a lot of the growing space. You can see a metal twin garden swing under the lilac tree/bush, with the wisteria growing up against the fence behind the swing. Depending on the angle, you will just see the sprouts, alliums, asparagus and a sand pit. For visitors who are not into gardening like we are, it is not too overwhelming. I totally get that when they have also walked past the intense UV windowsill setups. Some people aren't into it so i try to avoid talking about it. They won't be shown the tropical plant section in the loft! Aloe Vera, Christmas Cactus, Jade and orchid plants and some other rescued plants from the Mother in laws. We also have a box in the "big" (aka normal sized bathroom for UK. Our original bathroom is 5' wide and you can brush your teeth on the loo! lol), where we have been growing oyster mushrooms. Fits perfectly at the end of the bath.

When i make my potting soil i riddle the wood chip base compost we get from the garden centre and mix it with the home made compost, bake it, add vermiculite and pearlite and the big woody bits i add to the main bed on top of the oak leaves i put down in Nov from my Dad's massive tree.

With the sad and busy business of last year, i have been so lax on clearing out the wormery crate system, it was beginning to feel like the Atlas event! lol I am on my last riddle pan, trying to cokes out the last of the worms. I put a rubble bag in a bucket to support it as i was filling it up. Had to get hubby to help as it was too heavy for me to get it out of the bucket from almost two crates. Love these rubble bags as they have handles! Would have loved these during the house reno!

Always a shame that i miss these live streams as it is book and bedtime here but hope it is ok to comment in past tense to what was discussed in not in a totally coherent timeline manner! lol

I guess this is like a normal comment to a video that was recorded and edited a few days ago though? Yes i do waffle but it is also good for engagement! lol
