In one of her interviews, Laima Vaikule stated that she supported the entire Soviet Union financially.

“I supported the philharmonic societies; I supported the Soviet Union by releasing my discs, ” Vaikule said. The phrase caused controversy among the people.

It's funny to read that "the communists banned folk songs." These people simply never lived in the USSR, unlike me. Many in the late USSR complained that there were too many folk songs on the radio and television. (There was a slogan that “culture should be national – that is, ethnic – in form and socialist in content.)
PS. Such people have never heard of the Beryozka dance ensemble, and the Alexandrov ensemble and its dance troupe.
