Everyone is interested to know what is laparoscopy. It is basically a method of entry into the area of the surgery. In gynaecology we have certain surgeries which are done in the pelvic area and it involves a large incision which has to be taken into the abdomen into the lower abdominal vertically or horizontally, it only does it leave bad scars, but during the surgery also it increases the intraoperative blood loss and recovery time post surgery is also increased and the pain postoperative and the recovery back to work is also increased. So basically the morbidity increases with an increased incision line and once this technique of laparoscopy where you put in two single small 5 mm length ports on the side of the abdomen and through that we make entry onto the abdomen and perform the surgery. The surgery basically remains the same. The technique of the surgery remains the same. It is only that the way the entry in the area of the surgery field changes. Hence the post-operative recovery is fast, the blood loss obviously is less, it is negligible because the entry post is so small in size and more importantly the recovery is fast, you get back to your routine faster, you get to your routine working and you are also done with your surgery. Laparoscopy is a very good technique but it has to be done with someone who is experienced. It requires a certain type of training rigorous training in laparoscopy to take up the challenges of laparoscopy.
