SGC Grade Reveal. Is It Worth It To Grade With SGC?

SGC is starting to become more and more popular among collectors. There are a few reasons for this. SGC is the current best grading company for mid to low end cards since they a quick turnaround time and lower grading fees. While PSA and BGS are $150+ to grade a card SGC is only $30 for their standard submission.

This brings up a question though. Even though they are cheap to grade with, will you make your money back? In this video I show my SGC reveal, how much extra I made grading with SGC, and the pros and cons of their business.

Consistency is key and I think SGC is very consistent. I have an idea of what my cards are going to grade. With PSA you honestly never know like the guy that turned a PSA 6 to a SGC 10

I just got my SGC order. Not gonna lie. The grading was done amazingly. No complains here.

I believe SGC grading has huge upside in grading modern. The slabs are nice too in person.

My biggest gripe with SGC is the “9.5”; I love that they have it, but I don’t think people understand what it means. The description sounds a lot like a BGS “min” 9.5, but it prices very close to a PSA 9 (or less). There isn’t too much distinction from a pricing perspective on 9.5s and 9s, which again speaks to marketing / education.

Really like how you structured this video and that you didn’t exaggerate anything. Your videos are honestly super informative—thanks for all the insights.

I really like how you list the Raw, Graded and price spreads.

I just sent my first submission (ever) to SGC a couple of weeks ago and got confirmation they’re on the way back (will have tomorrow). I didn’t do any of the pre-cleaning, wipe with microfiber cloth, etc. just pulled from packs and put in a case. Out of 42 cards submitted, about 35 were either 10’s or 9.5’s. I’m happy with that. Curious/excited to see how these will sell compared to their non-graded counterparts.

I think SGC has its place but that order was 100% not worth it. $481 difference if you sell them all. Not counting time spent listing, fees, packing etc. and the biggest thing is someone has to actually BUY IT and that’s where I struggle with SGC slabs.

The liquidity just isn’t there for a lot of SGC stuff, but unlike PSA or BGS if you auction low-mid level SGC slabs you might not even get the cost of grading back. So you have to sell em at buy it now and that’s time consuming.

I think they grade pretty accurately, but at $30 a card and with how the market values SGC, unless you can bank on gemming 10s at a high rate it’s not worth it if you’re in it for flipping. Love SGC for the PC and vintage but with modern the value discrepancy is rough.

Thanks for the content. Ive recently been submitting to SGC as well. Really nice looking slabs and its tough to beat turn around time and price

Slick production on the final video. Thanks for putting it together! I also like HGA a lot, even though they're at a disadvantage with being a new player in the grading game.

people have been saying "just wait for PSA" for almost a year now. SGC is the move if youre trying to turn a quicker, but smaller profit. plus, once psa opens, we'll likely still have to wait close to a year for low end submissions like these. cant just hold on to product forever! i think people are starting to realize now that they couldve sold 2020 nba prizm (for example) for more raw a year ago than graded a 9 today. waiting isnt always worth it!

I love sgc. Since you can’t sell them the cards end up as long term holds automatically. Takes the thinking out of it.

Hey, you did well Scottie! I like SGC. I have yet to grade with them but am prepping an order right now. Can't wait for PSA any longer. Nice video 🔥

Didn't do that well? Nearly everything was a 9 or higher minus the one 8.5 I believe, I'd say that is pretty good. SGC's resell value are only getting better and in some cases have been better than PSA, times are changing and SGC is doing a great job of not only providing a affordable option to grading but also having value in their slabs and brand which increases that resell value and that is a good thing wether your just collecting for PC or have plans to sell/flip.

I haven't watched many of your videos, but may start. This was well done. I have not sent cards in to SGC since they don't have sub-grades. Have been using HGA since they cost less and have sub-grades. Plus, re-sale value seems to be equal or higher than SGC. For PC cards that are lower end have been going CSG. At around $30/card, not sure if I will try SGC, but you may be able to convince me otherwise

Curious about grading experiences.
I have tried PSA, Beckett, HGA and SCG. I have not received my Beckett order yet, but found HGA is the toughest. I feel like I thoroughly examine my cards and have submitted equal quality to all four, but have received 10% from SGC and PSA as 10’s. I have submitted double the number of cards to HGA and not received a single 10. Every card has 9 or better for three of the parameters, but every card is coming back with a 6 or 7 surface grading. I cannot see the issue, so no longer submitting cards to HGA and may have several regraded at SGC.

Great content! Some constructive advice: you should include the grading fees, especially when the difference turns out to be $30 bucks, making it really no difference at all (profit wise) besides having it protected in a slab.

One of my biggest gripes with PSA is how lenient they are with centering. So thanks for this video, as it seems SGC is that way, too; the centering on the Herbert 10 is very very noticable. But either way, congrats on the good returns!

Scottie thanks for posting the grade prices and short explanation, it's super helpful for a rookie like myself, pardon the bad pun, but one question I have is the differences you posted, in most cases doesn't that get eaten up by ebay and USPS costs? So my second follow up is why break even, assuming my aforementioned hypotheses is correct?
