Actually ball and pin socket joints or dumbbell joints are common in newer action figures like the SH Monsterarts Godzilla figures, Pacific Rim, King Kong, ... and many more in the future.

will other classes teach about more complex joints because a lot of collectors of high end figures demand more articulation

the shoulder joint on the figure looks like a ball hinge joint not a ball socket joint
