In this video I talk about how important having a solid temperament is for the working dog. This specifically applies to service dogs and service dog training. You can't use behavior modification to fix an underlying temperament problem like lack of confidence or noise phobias. We need to start with solid dogs and then develop them into stable working companions.

Your so right. I totally lucked out big time.
Cricket 🐾🦗🐾 is just super chill and super stable. Almost nothing gets her too excited or her play prey or food drive into a poor working condition of over distraction.

I think it's partly because she is half English Mastiff and they have way lower drive than the Ridgeback does.

This is something I think too many, way too many, self/home trainers don't pay attention to when selecting a dog for service 🐕‍🦺 dog.

The right dog for the right job for the right person. It must be why so many dogs can't even get tested till a min of 18 months. Then they are old enough that their personality really shines through..

Anyhoo, you make a very important and often overlooked point about personality with this post.❤ 🐕‍🦺🦗🐾

This is the lesson that's hard to teach some people. I have a lot of people want their dog to be a therapy dog, for example, and it's a hard conversation to tell them that their dog would be miserable with lots of strangers touching them, for example

So many people take a dog or other animal they love and try to self train them. Most are unbalanced scared animals. I have seen cats dogs some with two dogs and roosters. Most looked miserable and terrified. No former training was given. The two dog combos are on zip lines. The owners insist they go into the room for a MRI. We ask "are they trained to wear ear protection and did you bring a pair?" Nope. So we tell them they can't. They blow up staying, "their service dog has full access and may stay with me at all times. You cannot separate us." I say something like I love service and what is your dog training to do. " Nothing, he helps me feel better. We then explained to them, they are not allowed in the room, do to the level of sounds will harm his ears and scare him. He can stay with the medic as she works with dogs. We have several that come every so many months. My boss knows they are not service dogs but it is the only way to get them to come and care they need. I always want to send them with a copy of what a service dog really is.
Most of these animals are terrified. That part pisses me off. They do not see the hell they are putting the animal through.
