What is Gap Analysis in Learning Design?

Показать описание
As an instructional designer, your approach to creating good learning experiences should focus on more than just transferring knowledge. You must understand what your learners need to know to do the thing they are learning.
In the TrainingPros webinar, How to Use Gap Analysis to Improve Your Learning Design, accomplished author and learning consultant Julie Dirksen explains what gap analysis is and why it is important in instructional design.

TRANSCRIPT
Some people will recognize the basic framework that I'm talking about if you are familiar with KSAs, which is... usually knowledge, skills, attitude is the acronym for that. And that's kind of a starting place, but I actually think there's some other categories that are worth talking about that make this... if we really want to think about how do we create effective experiences.
When I talk about gap analysis, and this term crops up in a few different ways, so I want to be clear about how I'm talking about it. It's basically, what's the gap between where the current learner is and where the awesome future learner is? What's the difference between where they are now and where they need to be, and what are the missing ingredients that will give this person knowledge, skills, capabilities, all of these kinds of things that are going to hopefully allow them to be successful in their environment? And I actually mentioned that this is kind of an expansion on the KSA topics.
I actually have six categories that I most commonly use.
But is it a knowledge gap? And most things aren't just knowledge gaps. Occasionally that's the answer, but in a lot of cases that's not all that's going on. I separate out procedural gaps too, and that's just part of where it varies from a skills formation. I find that when we've got really well- defined procedures, we know exactly what somebody needs to do.
