I've spent hundreds of dollars on knives and I'd say just get a Mora Companion in stainless. It's the only one that really ever gets carried around. Maybe pair it with a Tops Operator for heavier stuff.

My sp10 was incredibly dull out of the box. I spent hours reprofiling it and getting it sharp but I got it done. However I agree it should be Sharp out of the box.

I got one of those a few months ago and after about twenty minutes it was just fine. Has been ever since, and I use it quite a lot. Sharp as a razor and decent toughness. It's a utility tool - that's all. Thick blank and yes, a steep angle, but it gets the job done whether its battoning, moderate prying, slicing my steak, or making shavings. No real complaints at this price point. Same with the "K-bar" replica. Sure, there are lots of other knives, but I don't mind modifying my gear. Ido it on lots of personal items, from guns to fire kits.

I ended up using my 1x30 belt sander to change the geometry. Then my Arkansas stone to hone the edge. Removed the paint and then blued the blade. Its a razor now. Very tough place and has held an excellent edge on several Backpacking trips in the beartooth range in Montana. Great knife once you change the geometry

this is used to saw thru metal for military pilots etc., and fight... you could process game and fight....stab etc...

I bought 3 SP2 and 2 SP1 knives from Ontario, mine came with a near perfect edge. Gideon must have got a lemon.

Ive had mine for 5years and use it for every outing i go from killing a rattle snake to batoning and making fire. I did spend almost 2 hours reprofiling the edge. Cut and smoothes the back guard. And filed down the bottom of the saw to a flat spine to be able to use a ferro rod

I agree a knife should come sharp. But why cant you sharpen it? Its 1095 steel not some impossible to sharpen new steel. Mine came sharp and the top clip was sharp too.

My SP-2 came sharp. I’ve touched it up a couple of times with a pocket sharpener. I just checked it thinking I missed something. Edge geometry is fine. It’s a few years old. Maybe QC is slipping and you simply got a bad one

I’ve had some Ontario’s that were sharp out of the box and others with the worst bevels I’ve seen . Doesn’t bother me as much as I have the equipment to quickly sharpen any knife but I understand the frustration. Steer clear of any Ontario’s sold by Walmart they have to cut corners to meet Walmart’s price point . A perfect example is the 499 the Walmart version has no fuller or sharpened swedge on the clip and the sheath uses aluminum instead of steel .

I bought 4 of them! But I have the equipment to finish the grind and sharpen them. They are 58 Rockwell in hardness so - not easy to go from butter knife to shaving sharp. I got a deal on them, I will have them shaving sharp

I had older Ontario knives 8+ yrs ago and they were awesome. 1095 sharp out of the box but I recently bought a 499 Air Force knife for my son and it was the same issue. Dull as could be any the sheath was falling apart even though it was $50 I didn’t cry about it. But still I was surprised

The last Ontario I had was the RAT 3. Used it for everything onboard ships and land. Carried it for 12 years and gave it to a new kid on the ship as I was retiring.

I have the marine Bowie and had to regrind it with the worksharp grinder and it took forever, but once you get it right it is a beast.

Just picked one up at big 5 for 40$ - I spent 15min and it’s ready to go. You must have got a lemon ? I think most all knives need a little work to fit your needs. I’m happy with it. Only gripe I have is it’s kinda slippery in hand can’t imagine how slippery it would get with water or blood? But again there’s a tool for every different job.

I love the sp53, bought three, still own two. Only other Ontario is Rat1 and sp46. The way Ontario is going I'm glad I got the sp46 five years ago.

I laughed when I started watching the video, same experience with a RAT 3. I sharpened on that knife for hours before I could get a decent edge. I wanted a small fixed blade and ended up ordering an ESEE 3 which was razor sharp when it arrived.

I had a similar issue with the Condor Otzi. I tried and tried and tried to put a proper edge on it but just couldnt get it to cut for shit. I finally messaged Condor and asked what i jeeded to do to make it sharp, they instead just sent me a new one and it was a freaking razor right outta the box. Maybe you got a dud or maybe ontario is just shitting the bed lately but either way i think it's totally worth shooting a quick email off to them or even just linking them this video to see what they say
