Physics and Technology: There is complementary relation between Physics and Technology. Sometimes, Physics give rise to new technology; at other times technology introduce new Physics.
Physics generates new technology: WiFi is a wireless communication technology. It is developed because of the discovery of basic laws of electricity and magnetism. Another example is introduction of semiconductor physics i.e. ‘silicon chip’ which give rise to computer revolution and everybody knows the need of computer in human lives. It is worth saying that a small computer chip is facilitating the working of whole world. Yet another example is the development of alternate sources of energy. We all know that fossil fuels will end, one day. What will happen after that, from where we derive our energy requirements Physics have answer to these questions. Physics generated new technologies. These technologies convert the energy from alternate sources into usable form. E.g. Solar energy, can be converted to electrical energy with the help of solar cells. Similarly solar cooker can be used to cook food. Geothermal energy, can be used for electricity generation.
Technology introduce new Physics: During the early stages of development, when scientists were trying to understand and improve the working of heat engine, there was rising of of the new branch of Physics called ‘Thermodynamics’. The technology of clock to measure the time give rise to Physics of velocity and acceleration.
To summarise this discussion we can say that Physics, technology and society are interrelated. Each have impact on other. If physics grows then technology will grow and simultaneously society will grow. Alternatively if society grows then there will be more research and new technologies.
