One Hack For Faster Mixes

Our new and incredibly talented content creator, Mel Torres, is joining us today to share his one trick to save time when mixing!

This trick works in any DAW, and is a consistent way to achieve mixes that involve the same instruments across multiple songs. Some DAW’s have template builders that allow you to do this but they don’t always work 1:1 like this trick.

Recently, Nashville mixer Billy Decker has made this trick popular in his course Template Mixing With Billy Decker. In this course he also goes through a bunch of his other tricks to create professional sounding mixes, faster.

You are going to take a completed mix that you’re happy with and has all the base points you’re looking for. The one thing you’re going to have to keep in mind for this trick, is that you have to have your mix organized and everything clearly labelled.

Step 1: Take your original mix and load it in your DAW.

Step 2: Create a “Save As” and name it something relevant to your new mix.

Step 3: Delete all the music content in your new “Saved As” project

Step 4: Replace all tracks with the corresponding files from the new session
Take and replace the old performances with a completely different song
Place the new take to the corresponding instruments in the new mix

Step 5: Make sure your project tempo in consistent with your new song

That was very recognizable, I do the same thing in cubase, and i would like to ad: before you drag/drop or copy/paste your tracks in the session, don't forget to set the tempo or tempo track in your daw first, otherwise the midi and audio tracks wont line up.
And as always"s, I loved the video you guys.🙂

Once you remove all your audio from your project, you can save to templates. I use reaper, and save busses to templates so I have different lead templates, different rhythm templates, different drum kits to templates, etc.

In reaper, you select the tracks that have your instruments/effects/amp sim etc loaded, so like, my rhythm R and L, and just save tracks to templates. Same with drums. I have different kits, different amps and yada yada I can load up with a click.

Cool, I discovered It by myself more than one year ago, I saved one mix template with all the best chain and VST settings for several musical genres, and then deleting the recorded track for the same instrument (as You) and deleting all the instruments not needed, including wavs 😉 the workflow is quicker and relaxing 👍

I'm trying to remain dawless but still learning so much. Whether one is automating parameters in post- in a daw or in pre- on a capable sequencer like my Deluge, the same principles apply. The explanatory text is really helpful, explaining what you're hearing (or not hearing). Stuff like "I am noticing here that the lead guitar is not present enough" and "in this specific section the mix tends to be muddy because of the 5 layers of guitar" is incredibly helpful, thanks for taking the time to do this. As an aside, if you're putting 5 layers of guitar into a mix, I would assume you're _trying_ to sound muddy! I guess there's a fine line between mud and sludge lol 😛 But to answer your question, picking Warren's brain (and Mel's too) is my best workflow hack.

I recently did this on a whole project. I mixed 1 song really well and then I just threw everything in that mix. I obviously had to make some adjustments, but they were minor. This is a great tip for real!!!

In pro tools, you could import the session data from the mixed song into the new songs session and just cut/paste the tracks in to their similar counterparts. Then delete the imported tracks to free up space. Don’t worry about deleting them from the new session, as you can just import session data from the mixed session again if you need to.

Cool video and thanks Mel. Whatever works for you and everyone has their own workflow but honestly, I just create [session] templates as well as channel templates that I simply call up *before tracking anything*. This actually is faster in my mind as I don't have to copy / paste parts from the other new song, align them etc. and commence tracking in the setup I want right off the rip. It in theory already has all the components in the way of plugins, busses etc.

I do this for mastering. Create a template on the 2bus. It really does save time. Obvs some tweaks here and there. BTW Warren, what are the 2 red monitors that your studio is rocking in these last few vids?

you can also record directly into your template and leave the plugins off for tracking so your computer doesn't die, or as well use them for more "finished" monitoring sound here and there.
