In the 70's and 80's the most common theory was that the creators of Scooby-Doo were basically putting their acid trip in cartoon form.
yes there was the Vietnam war and Cold war but there was also colleges experimenting with LSD for enlightenment and then it became a street drug.

I wouldn't be surprised if they wrote a paper (my weirdest college paper was an analysis of "Little Shop of Horrors" for a cinema class) but a thesis is basically like writing an entire book about a subject. What the hell did they major in that would approve that project?

My favorite Scooby Doo fan theory: Shaggy is the real owner of the Mystery Machine van, but Fred always drives it because Shaggy has gotten many DUIs and he’s always too high to drive the vehicle.

My theory is that the 'gang' is a group of four friends, constantly under effect of psychodelic drugs, which they abuse a lot. Late 60s, hippie flower power van, "scooby snacks" which the most addicted members of the gang will do anything for - you get the idea. Scooby is not a dog, it's just some sort of thing they hallucinated at one point and he thought it funny enough to run along with it, but he's just a normal guy, which explain his ability to speak and do other things dogs normally can't. This also explains why at the beginning they always see some witches, zombies, ghosts etc supernatural stuff, which - as their high fades away - always become some regular, random humans, "dressed up" as monsters.

Shaggy is the only one who remembers any of the events with real monsters, etc ... There's been many episodes where the whole crew "forgets" what just happend and leaves him baffled
