Tease and open for the 10pm newscast on Nexstar-operated CW affiliate WPIX. The station is legally owned by Mission Broadcasting, but for all intents and purposes it is a Nexstar station.
Now before everyone spams it in the comments, I am very much aware that Nexstar acquired majority control of The CW late last year, making PIX a de-facto O&O and the new flagship of the network; that title was held for a long time by CBS-owned WPSG, which is slated to drop the network later this year. However, it is still weird to call channel 11 an O&O of sorts, mainly because Nexstar emphasizes a bit too well on their localism, continuing the momentum they had under their longtime Tribune ownership. In addition, neither CBS nor Nexstar established dedicated subsidiaries handling CW stations themselves, rendering the O&O flag a bit meaningless.
Nexstar is legally restricted from acquiring WPIX outright because of outdated FCC regulations regarding the UHF discount; WPIX currently broadcasts physically on channel 11 and therefore counts under Nexstar's ownership caps, so they initially sidelined the station to Scripps, which acquired six other stations (Phoenix was the only Nexstar station to be divested to Scripps in that merger). However, coinciding with Scripps acquiring Ion and WPXN, Mission exercised Nexstar's repurchase clause in 2020. As a history sidenote, WPIX was operated under a subsidiary separate from Tribune Broadcasting (formerly WGN Continental) until 1991 when the New York Daily News was sold to Robert Maxwell.
I think it's time for Nexstar to clean up its act and move WPIX's signal to UHF so they can take advantage-I mean avail of the UHF discount and acquire the station outright.
A few months ago, WPIX made a massive overhaul to its on-air presentation, with new graphics from Rey Rodriguez, a custom rendition of 615's New York's Very Own from Stephen Arnold Music, and a new set from FX Design.
Anchored by Shirley Chan and Kori Chambers.
